Glenn Gould described the Goldberg Variations as “the most brilliant substantiation of a ground bass in musical history”. It is of course a monument of our musical culture but also a work of a composer who here seems to revel in the joy of his own creative virtuosity, composing for fun!

Roy Stratford will explore the intricacies of this wonderful work and explain exactly what Glenn Gould was talking about! Roy will be making use of the piano to illustrate his talk.

This talk stands on its own and is also a pre-concert talk for Angela Hewitt’s performance of the Goldberg Variations at St Christopher’s Church on Saturday 24th May.
