Meet Tom Blake

A lover of words and creative marketing

Hello there, I'm Tom Blake, the founder of the award-winning content marketing business TJ Creative. My business is based in Haslemere, and actually, I grew up in Haslemere. From the age of, well, 0, right up to the age of 25, I lived in Haslemere. It's this personal connection with the town that drives what I do here at TJ - creative content marketing to grow startups, small businesses and SMEs.

Sure, I've worked with many national and international brands as a marketer and achieved some great results, but it's making a difference to local businesses in Surrey that is just a little more satisfying. So how do I make a difference to startups and small businesses? Through several key digital marketing services which embrace content - Website content, copywriting (blogs, paid adverts, leaflet copy etc.) and something called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which is a website marketing technique to help a business's website to get more visitors landing on their website from Google search; leading to more enquiries, leads and sales!

A little about my career

I graduated from Kingston University with a BA(Hons) degree in 2015 after studying Creative Writing with English Language & Communications. Whilst studying at university I decided to start my journey as a psychological thriller author and published my first novel back in 2013. Now I have 5 novels available to read from Amazon (on Kindle, paperback and audiobook) under the pen name T. J. Blake. My latest release is the paranormal, psychological thriller "Familiar".

I started my career by joining one of the UK's leading SEO agencies as a Copywriter, soon becoming a Senior SEO Copywriter. It was here that I learned about SEO - both what to do and what not to do when it comes to marketing your website!

I then made a move to a Digital Marketing & Design Agency as a Content Marketing Executive, which provided a broader spectrum of content beyond SEO. This same business then turned into what was called a Venture Enabler, which was a great experience to write for invested startups and help them to launch their business. This meant I led digital marketing strategies, app and software wording, brand establishment (creating logos and brand writing guides), and of course, content and copywriting across digital and traditional marketing activities.

Today though, alongside running TJ Creative and writing books, I'm the Senior Content Executive at the UK's leading trade directory, Checkatrade. I lead a team of writers to produce high quality content for Checkatrade - particularly on the consumer and trade blog.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
