Learn about and meet some bats face to face before heading out into the reserve in search of species found in this special location.

Join Ryan Greaves for an evening’s bat walk around Ebernoe Wildlands. The evening will begin with an opportunity to meet some rehabilitated bats and learn about our local bat life before heading out for a walk into the reserve in search of bats.

7.45 Arrive at Ebernoe Church.

8.00 Introductory talk, and a chance to meet some live patients from the Sussex Bat Hospital

9.00 – Start our bat walk, with bat detectors in hand, to discover what species are using this nationally significant site.

Ryan Greaves is the Events Coordinator for Sussex Bat Group. Ryan studied Zoology at University and has been involved in conservation ever since, working in a number of roles for the Sussex Wildlife Trust and volunteering with local wildlife recording groups. 

Currently he works as Wild Futures Manager for the Knepp Wildland Foundation, based at the Knepp Estate in West Sussex. His role primarily focuses on education and youth engagement work on the estate, as well as across partner sites throughout Sussex. He has also been a safari guide at Knepp for the past 10 years and has helped lead wildlife surveying teams in the jungle of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Meeting point: Holy Trinity Church, Streel’s Lane, Petworth, GU289LD. As you are driving along Streel's lane, keep an eye out for a small white sign saying "To the church".

What to bring: Torch, Clothes for all weather and lots of layers (it gets cold quickly, even on warm days), insect repellant.

Parking and charges: Free parking is available at Ebernoe Church,

Toilet and catering facilities: Please be aware that there are no facilities at this site. A toilet is being made available in the cricket pavilion which can be found on the left hand side of Streel's lane as you come from A283, about 400 yards before the turning off to the church.

Public Transport: There is no public transport to this location.

Accessibility: We will be walking at night on rough terrain for a distance of around 3km.
