Surrey and the New Space Revolution

The Godalming Museum invites you to an insightful evening at the Wilfrid Noyce Community Centre, where we will explore Surrey's pivotal role in the New Space Revolution. This event will present a detailed examination of how pioneering advancements in space technology emerged from Surrey, fundamentally transforming the landscape of space exploration. Whether you are a dedicated space enthusiast or simply intrigued by the evolution of this field, this event offers a unique opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the remarkable innovations that originated in Surrey.

Event Synopsis

In 1979, a young visionary academic, Martin Sweeting from the University of Surrey, envisioned a revolutionary type of satellite. By leveraging cutting-edge developments in microelectronics, he designed a small, affordable spacecraft capable of executing sophisticated space missions. This innovation culminated in the launch of UoSAT-1 by NASA in 1981, marking the inception of a new era in space exploration.

The success of this satellite led to the establishment of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), a trailblazing company that made Surrey the global hub for nations eager to learn about affordable and effective satellite solutions. Over 40 years later, the groundbreaking work that began in Surrey is now recognized worldwide as Space 2.0—a testament to Surrey’s pioneering role in the New Space Revolution.

This event will share the captivating story of how Surrey's vision and ingenuity transformed the space industry forever.

Meet the Speaker

Craig Underwood
Emeritus Professor of Spacecraft Engineering, University of Surrey

Professor Craig Underwood has been at the forefront of spacecraft engineering and education for decades. After earning his degree in Physics with Computer Science at York, he began his career teaching physics at Scarborough Sixth-Form College, where he first became involved with Surrey’s innovative UoSAT satellite program.

In 1986, Craig joined the University of Surrey as a researcher, later becoming a lecturer and then professor. He completed his PhD in 1996, focusing on spacecraft engineering, the space environment, and remote-sensing instrumentation. Throughout his illustrious career, he has made invaluable contributions to the space sector and dedicated himself to enhancing public understanding of science and engineering.

Now retired, Craig continues to inspire audiences with his deep knowledge and passion for space exploration. He resides in Godalming with his wife, Hilary, and is thrilled to share the incredible story of Surrey’s journey in shaping the future of space.
