This is Haslemere are often blown away by the efforts of young people within our community to help others. We saw another example of that one weekend in June 2026 when local Fernhurst resident, Lily, held a cake sale to raise money for a cause close to her heart. Lily is just 10 years old and attends Rake Primary School.

Lily was raising money for Cancer Research. A number of Lily's family members have had cancer, including her Dad. The family are all too aware that, without the support of charities such as these, her father may not be around today. Lily's mum Amy said, 'We are very grateful that he is still with us. Cancer Research is a cause close to our hearts as, without fantastic charities such as these, Lily might not have her wonderful Dad any more. Cancer research really does save lives.' Asked why she decided to do a cake sale, Lily told us, 'Raising money for Cancer Research really can help more people to have a second chance at life'.

The cake sale was held in the church hall next to St Margaret's Church in Fernhurst and the cakes were absolutely delicious. We were definitely extremely impressed by Lily's baking skills. Lily told us that she enjoyed baking the banana bread and the cookies the most.  She said, 'I'm really grateful to friends and family who helped baked for us, and for everyone's kind donations. Thank you so much.'

Lily raised a staggering £363.10 from selling her cakes, all of which will go to Cancer Research. Bridget Davies, manager of the Cancer Research shop in Haslemere, was one of the first to congratulate Lily on her fundraising efforts saying, 'Well done Lily - that's amazing. A big thank you for supporting Cancer Research!'
