Green drinks

We will hold green drinks on the second (rather than the usual first) Thursday of the month this time. So, on Thursday 9 January from 7.30pm in the Snug at The Mill, Shottermill Road. We will look back on 2024 and think ahead about what we might want to do in 2025, and discuss any other green issues anyone wants to bring up. Please join us.

Community Fridge now open

Haslemere Community Fridge is now open and redistributing surplus food from local businesses, farms, and neighbours, making sure that good food goes to people, not landfill. Set up by Love Haslemere Hate Waste in partnership with Green and Blue Studios, Haslemere Food Bank and FareShare, it is open Thursdays 4-6pm, Fridays 8am-3pm and Saturdays 9.30am-12pm and is located at Green and Blue Studios, Unicorn Trading Estate, Weydown Road GU27 1FG. Open to everyone. You can find more information here.

Help The Wassail

January’s Swan Barn Wassail was a huge success thanks to the great volunteers and revellers both – so much so we think we’re going to need lots of hands-on help to prep and deliver another great community event in January 2025. If you can help in any role – organising, cooking, set up, stewarding or serving on the night, or providing music – email Claire at clairematthes.copse@gmail.com.

Caring for Creation

Volunteer on Lynchmere Common

The Lynchmere Society has volunteering opportunities coming up through January on the unique local nature reserve of Lynchmere common. Involving clearing invasive species with great bonfires and friendly people. Stout gloves and loppers are all you need. You can find out more here.

Positive news

Book of the month: Our Green Heart: The Soul and Science of Forests by Diana Beresford-Kroeger

The author brings together her Druidic education and pioneering scientific research to create a holistic view of trees and their role in the natural world of which we are an intimate part.

Tree of the month: Weeping silver lime

This weeping silver lime (Tilia tomentosa 'Petiolaris') looked magnificent in the September sunshine in Kew Gardens. Said by some to be the most graceful of all large weeping trees, it is named partly for the silvery undersides of its leaves which appear to shimmer in a breeze. Its cup shaped, creamy yellow, richly scented flowers are curiously narcotic to bees.
