Green drinks

August being holiday time, we will have a more informal green drinks, with a report back from some recent events and a general chat about green issues of the day. All welcome. From 7.30pm on Thursday 7 August in the Snug at The Mill in Critchmere Lane.

Moth monitoring

This poplar moth was one of 64 species found in the moth trap set up at our allotment and one other in Collards Lane on the night of 22 July. The moths were extraordinary in their variety in shape, size, colour, markings and other features. The trapping was a joint venture between Haslemere Biodiversity Group, Surrey Wildlife Trust and Haslemere Natural History Society. Thanks to the organisers and the expert identifiers - Tony Hardy, Andy Swan and Kimberley Lankshear.

Farmers' market and repair cafe

We will have our stall at the market on Saturday 2 August from 10am to 2pm. The Repair Cafe will be at the Swan Inn on the same day from 10am to 1pm.

Book of the month: There are Rivers In The Sky, by Elif Shafak

Captivating and moving storytelling about great rivers and the lives and history that flow with them. An appropriate novel to read alongside Robert Macfarlane's Is A River Alive?

Tree of the month: pavement apple

The potted apple (Malus domestica) is ripening nicely on the High Pavement above Lower Street. It's variety is uncertain but is robust enough to thrive in its urban setting. Residents have been slowly creating a wildlife corridor along the Pavement where Spring and summer flowers are a delight for passers-by.
