What's On in Haslemere - Planters in the Sky

Mar 25, 2021

Olga Houghton talks art in Haslemere

As the COVID-19 vaccine rolls out and the world begins to awaken, events are back on the calendar. More freedom and possibilities are being afforded to the residents of Haslemere, and what better way to celebrate that with an official unveiling of four new sculptures in our town centre.

PLANTERS IN THE SKY

Ken Griffiths, Chair of Haslemere Festival and Fringe is delighted to announce that Serenade to the Sky has now been installed. This is the third sculpture of a series of four and faces on to Lion Green, where there have had so many music events over the years.

The wonderful sculptures, forged and fabricated in steel by local Blacksmith Andrew Brighty,  were named by Kerry Morren-Jeffs, who could visualise the musical theme, stating ‘music unites people of all backgrounds. I imagined the sound of music being carried on the breeze and the joy and hope this would bring’. How very apt for this setting.

Brighty is now working on our fourth sculpture which will be sited in Petworth Road adjacent to the Town Hall. This will be a tribute to all the many volunteers who work in and around Haslemere and will be a wonderful way of thanking each and every one of them, especially over this last year, when they have supported the community so admirably.

Providing Haslemere with 4 bespoke pieces of artwork, of the size that they are and designed to be in situ for decades to come, is most certainly one of the biggest deliveries of art given to Haslemere, in the Town’s history. So this is certainly something to celebrate! There will be a formal unveiling on Sunday May 30th at 2:00 pm, around the sculpture on Lion Green to be performed by Michael More-Molynuex, the Lord Lieutenant for Surrey and Mathew Bowcock, co-founder and chair of the Beacon Collaborative.

Following the unveiling of the sculptures, there will be the final judging of the Scarecrow Competition  with the famous children's book auther Julia Donaldson, whose works include The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom,  as one of the judges. Please do come out and support this event with the family - more on this event can be read here.

Progress? is situated in the High Street and represents: A celebration of the Arts & Crafts Movement and Haslemere Peasant Arts Society of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Movements which questioned the so called progress of the growing industrial society.

Memisis is situated at Clements Corner / Fosters Bridge and represents: Certain properties of plants or flowers, which we see all around us in Haslemere and encourages the viewer to use their imagination. It is like reading a poem about a flower, Ken says, where you conjure your image of the flower in your own mind, which could be wildly different to another person’s image. How will you see it?

The sculptures have been paid for by a Haslemere resident and philanthropist, who supports the arts and wishes to remain anonymous.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
