Following on from the success of the first Cooking with what’s in your Cupboard event back in February, Haslemere residents enjoyed a second morning of cooking this week. Recipes were again inspired by the wonderful Jack Monroe, demonstrating that absolutely delicious meals can be made on a budget. This time attendees learned how to make flat bread, hummus, falafels, fish cakes and pickled cucumbers. The super foods were a humble tin of chickpeas and tuna, provided by the Haslemere Foodbank.
Cooking with what’s in your Cupboard was started in response to the cost of living going up, leaving so many of us struggling. These classes teach lots of helpful skills to cook on a budget but, crucially, they also look at how to eat healthily too following store cupboard recipes.
Lee told us, 'It was so lovely putting time aside to cook with the community and sit down and eat together. We made flat bread, hummus, falafels, fish cakes and pickled cucumbers. Our super foods were a humble tin of chickpeas and tuna, kindly provided by the Foodbank.'
Huge thanks must go to Lee from Three Counties Vineyard for organising the event as well as chef extraordinaire Wai. Thanks as well must go to Christians Against Poverty and to The Haslemere Penny Ha'Penny Trust. Thanks to their generosity, this time round, those attending had induction hobs and pans. And thanks as always to the Haslemere Methodist Church for hosting the event.
All sessions are free to attend. Lee and the team are hoping to run another Cooking with what’s in your Cupboard session after the Summer. Look out for the next date in October. Details will be on the 3 Counties Vineyard website.
