We couldn't miss the opportunity to shine the spotlight today on one of Haslemere's most inspiring residents when it comes to fundraising. Sandy Cannon will be known to many of you either because you've met her whilst shopping in Waitrose, or because you've interacted with her through her fundraising efforts for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Today, Sandy spent hours in the freezing cold outside Waitrose in Haslemere with her charity tombola. Every donation earned people a prize - wrapped gifts and chocolates were on offer for all! Given that temperatures have barely managed to get above freezing today, Sandy deserves a medal for that alone. Braving the cold (she had to buy a hat half way through the morning to try and keep warm!) she raised over £200 today. An impressive achievement in a few hours!
However, today's tombola is just the latest in a long line of fundraising events for Sandy. Her fundraising efforts began around 14 years ago. She readily admits that she has lost count of the amount she has raised over the years. But, it certainly runs well into the thousands. In the last 12 months alone, she knows that she has raised over £2000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Sandy has personal reasons for supporting this fantastic charity. Her mother passed away 24 years ago of cancer. And sadly, more recently, she lost her sister to ovarian cancer. She knows first hand what a difference Macmillan can make.
Looking to the future, Sandy tells us that she is retiring from Waitrose in January. Not that this means she will be putting her feet up! Far from it! Instead, Sandy is already relishing the extra hours that this will give her to raise even more money for Macmillan. And she is already eyeing up opportunities to help out in the community in other ways through volunteering.
So thank you Sandy for everything you have done for our local community and for Macmillan. You're a star!
