Mountain bike coach led off route by riders celebrating business milestone

 

October 27th 2026, Hindhead, Surrey. A local mountain biking coach was in for a surprise when one of her weekly group rides took an unexpected detour.

 

Jackie Field founded the Off Root mountain bike coaching business in 2016. She leads a social ride from a different Surrey, Sussex, or Hampshire pub every Tuesday evening, providing adults a fun way to get fit, visit new trails, and improve their off-road cycling skills.

 

Seven riders had gathered at the Barley Mow at The Sands, along with three of Jackie’s assistant instructors.

“We set off on a new route along the bridleways and woodland around the Sands and Cuttmill pond, and one of the instructors offered to take the lead as he knows that area very well,” says Jackie.

 

As the ride drew to a close, the group suddenly took a diversion to one of the riders’ houses, where more than twenty regular clients were waiting to greet Jackie with cake and champagne to celebrate Off Root’s tenth business anniversary.

 

One of Off Root’s original clients, Dr. Shapour Hariri, hosted the surprise party and gave a speech thanking Jackie for a decade of sharing her energy and enthusiasm for mountain biking and the outdoor life. He credited her with creating a community of riders who’ve been inspired to explore and care for the local countryside and woodland trail networks, while forming strong friendships.

 

“It was nice to be led astray by my clients, especially when there was cake and champagne at the end,” joked Jackie. “I was really touched to see so many people gathered to celebrate Off Root’s 10th birthday. Many of them have been riding with me since I started the business and have become really good friends and very accomplished riders,” she enthused.

 

Originally focused on developing adults’ off-road riding skills through weekly rides, and one-to-one coaching, Off Root soon expanded to add children’s groups on Saturdays and adults’ rides during the week, led by Jackie and her growing team of qualified instructors.

 

For Jackie, the business has always been about more than learning to ride a mountain bike, “Mountain biking is a brilliant way to get outdoors, explore new areas, and make friends with people you wouldn’t normally meet. Seeing people develop their skills and confidence and watching friendships blossom through riding together is one of the best parts of running Off Root.”
