A business born in Lockdown, and beyond

Can online fitness work for me?

Ali has been a group fitness instructor for 3 years, teaching Les Mills classes live at the Haslemere Leisure centre as well as running her own online fitness community, the Ali C Fitness Hub

After having my children, I decided it was time to retrain and become a group fitness instructor. I was passionate about Les Mills classes so trained in my favourite programmes: Body Pump and Body Balance. I also secured a few regular teaching slots at the Haslemere Leisure Centre. It was perfect; I was able to be around for the kids plus get paid to teach classes that I loved and would have participated in anyway.

Lockdown then hit, gyms closed and of course my new hobby/career came to an abrupt halt. Interestingly one of my lovely participants posted on the Haslemere community board, asking if anyone knew me and if I was running any online classes. It hadn’t really occurred to me to be honest, but it was the push I needed.

I started teaching live fitness classes on Zoom. Les Mills had kindly provided programmes we were allowed to teach with license free music (an important point for fitness instructors) during lockdown only, and I put together my own classes teaching HiiT, dumbbell based strength classes and mobility/flexibility programmes.

The Ali C Fitness Hub was born!

During lockdown, I saw an ‘all or nothing’ approach to fitness, online classes were literally saving some people. In deep lockdown I had up to 20 participants in my weekly Saturday morning HiiT class, the most popular on the timetable. I even ran a virtual fitness retreat in conjunction with Kate Hardy from Haslemere based Bargate Beauty, where we did some HiiT, some yoga and then a guided facial, it was a roaring success and brought us all together in some really dark times.

Now we have come out of lockdown the Ali C Fitness Hub still has a very loyal, but smaller, following. People have changed their workout habits, in the same way that Peloton now works for many. The Ali C Fitness Hub members love my personal approach and the accountability for signing up to something which is live, but online, from the comfort of their own home. I have got to know every single one of my members and we always have a quick chat before or after class, it really is an amazingly supportive community.

I have gone from teaching 3 regular classes a week at the leisure centre, to 12+ between the in person/live-online formats. I also have an ‘on demand’ platform with all of my classes recorded for my members to access anytime they fancy a workout.

The Ali C Fitness Hub works really well for those that are busy, working from home, or if they are tied down to young kids. As well as the local Haslemere community, we have members dialling in from London, Scotland, and even Dubai when the timings allow!

So what's next? I'm passionate about using fitness to improve your mood, and I promote this over the physical and aesthetic benefits. Covid-19 not only meant that we had to watch the spread of germs across the globe, but levels of stress and anxiety sky-rocketed and are still infiltrating lives today.

A study carried out by Les Mills showed that regular sessions of yoga classes can help banish lockdown blues, increase sleep quality and boost mental health. The study found that participants who incorporate regular 30-40 minute sessions of this specialist stretching and meditation into their daily life experienced significantly improved sleep and cardiovascular health, enhanced recovery from mental and physical stress and boosted positive feelings.

I already teach Les Mills Body Balance alongside my own flexibility programmes, but have decided to train as a Power Yoga instructor. I am about half way through my 200 hour teacher training and am very much looking forward to delivering this online and in person in the local community. It is a powerful fitness based approach to yoga, flowing with breath and ending with meditation. I have already eyed up some local venues and am planning to launch in September 2022 - watch this space!

Please get in touch with me if you are interested in joining my online fitness community, the Ali C Fitness Hub, live Les Mills classes at the Haslemere Leisure Centre or future Power Yoga Classes in the community!

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
