Bowen - a therapy for these times?

Bowen - a deeply relaxing & gentle holistic hands-on therapy

Bowen, a deeply relaxing and gentle holistic hands-on therapy that works with the fascia of the body and can help support muscular skeletal pain and discomfort as well as stress and anxiety, could turn out to be the perfect therapy for you in the world we are currently living in.

Bowen also helps to boost the immune system, perfect for our bodies with the current pandemic and this time of year!

My journey with The Bowen Technique started nearly 20 years ago when an old school friend invited me along to a Bowen Technique taster session weekend, a therapy I had not heard of, but I was keen to learn something new so went along. I was so bowled over by its light touch and effectiveness, I signed up to complete the course there and then!

What is Bowen?

Bowen is a gentle therapy that works on the connective tissue in the body. Put very simply each element of your body is connected to the other, via a variety of different types of connective tissue including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. Pain or imbalance happens when there is a change in these connective tissue tensions. Gentle moves are made over key areas of connective tissue, there is no manipulation or adjustment, making it a deeply relaxing treatment.

By releasing stress at a very deep level, via its calming effect on the Autonomic Nervous System, Bowen sets the scene for the body to heal itself. Bowen does not attempt to force the body to change; rather it asks the body to recognise and make the changes necessary to bring it back to homoeostasis (physiological equilibrium).

A gentle re-introduction to touch

For many people it’s still a strange experience for anyone from outside their household to touch them, and because of the gentle moves that we make Bowen is a really safe and reassuring way to get used to the sensation of a therapist working on your body and to relieve some of the stress we have been holding during these challenging times.

You can remain fully clothed

Unlike many other therapies, Bowen can be performed just as effectively through clothing, removing any concern or discomfort that a client might have about having to get undressed.

Social Distancing comes as standard

It’s also the perfect social distancing therapy. During a Bowen therapy treatment, we work on the whole body, but we only make around 4-6 moves at a time before stepping out of the treatment room for a 2-5 minute “break”. This break is a key part of the treatment and allows the clients body and mind space and time to absorb the work that we have done and decide how it needs to respond. It also means that we are reducing the amount of time we spend in the same space as our clients – one of the key recommendations from government.

As Bowen therapists we aren’t interested in bringing our clients back week after week, month after month. We are interested in holistic treatments that get to the root cause of our clients’ health and well-being issues and resolve them, not stick a plaster on them. Most clients need on average around 3 treatments, each a week apart, to bring about a positive long-term, if not permanent, change to their health and well-being.

Bowen is suitable for all ages, from a baby with colic to an elderly person with arthritis, and there are no known contra-indications.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
