Grayshott Folk Club in 2023

2023 is another busy year for Grayshott Folk Club, on Friday 24th March at 7.30p.m. they will host three Award-Winning Folk Artists: Odette Michell, Amy Goddard and Zoё Wren, known as The Honeybees.

Zoё was one of the first performers to play and sing for us on Thursday 22nd October 2020 after the series of Covid lock downs and gig postponements, that year. She captivated our audience with her beautiful singing, skilful playing, her humour and confident stage manner. Being a one-time busker has given Zoё that confidence to engage with any audience.

This time around, Zoё will be joined by two of her gifted musical friends, Odette Michell and Amy Goddard.
Together, they call themselves: The Honeybees.

Formed after an impromptu session backstage, the Honeybees gave their first public performance on Stage 2 at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 2018. Fatea described the trio as:
‘Stunning! Three superb voices that worked so well together and hopefully it won’t be a one-off.’

Indeed it wasn’t and the trio returned to Cambridge Folk Festival in 2022 for a return performance.

All experienced artists in their own right, Odette Michell, Zoё Wren and Amy Goddard perform in a songwriters’ circle format with some solo performances and many opportunities to collaborate. Exquisite close harmonies and excellent musicianship seamlessly blend the traditional and contemporary Folk music worlds together.

Each member of The Honeybees brings something to the party; exceptional playing, wonderful voices, warm personalities and together they make beautiful harmonies. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts and these three girls have something very special to offer us.

Odette Michell

Odette is a British Folk singer-songwriter, guitarist and bouzouki player with a bold new take on the acoustic tradition and a voice capable of demonstrating the finer points of both Folk and traditional song with genuine craftsmanship. Odette has been mentored & championed by Top Folkster Show of Hands' Phil Beer, she was invited to perform at Celtic Connections in 2021 and she is about to release her brand new album.

She is a past winner of the PRS Lynsey de Paul Award and the Alan Surtees Trust grant, and has had airplay on BBC Radio 2, as well as appearing on “London Live” and the BBC “One Show”.

Saturday 22nd April, 7.30pm - The Ocelots

These guys created such a big impact on our audience in August 2022, that we just had to have them back again, as soon as possible! Brandon and Ashley are twins who grew up in Ireland. They have wonderful voices and their sibling harmonies are to die for........They also play Guitar and Banjo.

The Ocelots are 24 year-old twins Brandon and Ashley Watson. Although they were born and raised in Ireland, they currently live in Leipzig, Germany. They both play Guitar and Banjo and have beautiful singing voices. They also possess that natural Irish charm and wit that engages their audience. Ashley and Brandon have crafted their song writing and musical experiences together to produce a forceful blend of rich, sibling harmonies and bare, raw acoustic Folk.

Their music perfectly embodies the breezy effortlessness of early Bob Dylan and their harmonies bring to mind Simon & Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers.

They've had over 1.6 Million listens on Spotify and last time they played for us at Grayshott, we had a local artist (Roger Dellar), producing a live painting of them whilst they played!

The word is starting to get out and in May 2022, they were invited to perform (virtually), at the Folk International Alliance showcase event in Kansas City, USA. Since then, they've played for us at Grayshott Folk Club and all over the European mainland. They've been warmly embraced in Ireland too and are starting to appear at prestigious festivals all over the place.

This won't be the last time you hear about The Ocelots... Their star is in the ascendant, for sure.

The Ocelots' live set combines all that is great about Folk music, so come and be charmed and entertained by this charismatic duo.

Friday 26th May 2023, 7.30pm - John Blek

John is a gentle giant who originates from Cork in the Republic of Ireland. He is a great guitarist and has a beautiful singing voice. He is also a prolific songwriter and has recorded six albums in a very short space of time, despite the challenges of lockdown.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
