HasleWorks - Co-Working Space in central Haslemere

Feb 13, 2022

It is hard to believe that it is only a few months ago since we opened our doors for business, offering a high quality co-working space in the centre of town. The highlight of this time has been meeting and getting to know the diverse range of people who have chosen to conduct some or all of their work lives at HasleWorks.

On any one day we may have a communications consultant, a PhD researcher, an insurance broker, a digital marketing expert, a town planner and a recruitment specialist working under one roof. We have even had a barrister conduct court hearings from the booths that provide enclosed spaces for private calls. Successful job interviews have taken place, training courses delivered and contracts negotiated from our building, which is just round the corner from the High Street.

The greatest reward from creating this new venture is to hear of the value that our members gain from their time at HasleWorks and we have been absolutely thrilled to discover some of their comments on social media, such as “honestly it’s been the nicest two days of work ever”. Our conviction that people would not return to commuting five days a week but would want an alternative to working from home has been borne out by the feedback we have been receiving. It is noticeable how many of our members have moved to Haslemere during the last two years, having realised that they can live in an area as beautiful as this one and not have to spend at least three hours of each day travelling to and from work. House renovations are a regular topic of conversation as, understandably, participating in a Zoom call with an electric drill in the background is not ideal nor is sharing the call with small children and a barking dog!

We are very motivated to continue to provide social value by enabling people to work more productively and, for many, to reduce the isolation and intensity of turning home into a workplace. It is not all work though and we hold regular events with speakers. We are also very committed to contributing to the local economy and know that our members are regular customers of the local cafes and shops in the town centre. We have not installed a coffee machine in order to drive business elsewhere. It has been a real pleasure to get to know some of the local business owners, including people who set up on-line enterprises during the lockdown, such as the founders of Olive & Bloom Grazing and Club Lunch Haslemere. We have welcomed the opening of new places to eat and drink, including Moma and Redh and believe that increased economic activity can only make the town a more vibrant place and benefit everyone.

Although the nature of work has changed dramatically over the last century, the cultural legacy of people who lived in Haslemere at the turn of the twentieth century is a source of inspiration to us today. On our ground floor we have a copy of a tapestry designed by Godfrey Blount who was a driving force in making Haslemere a hub of creative industry and believed in ‘the double pleasure of lovely surroundings and happy work’. We believe in this too and have some striking paintings on our walls, including work at present by local artist @kirstyjrouse, and have used vivid colours in our interior design which are welcome on this grey winter day. It is our aim to donate to local causes any profit we make from HasleWorks and so if you choose it as your place of work you will also be contributing to the good of the local community.

HasleWorks provides a high quality co-working space accommodating up to thirty people working simultaneously across two floors. There is a dedicated conference room, acoustic phone booths and comfortable seating for well earned breaks.

Founding directors, Matthew and I have lived in Haslemere for twenty years and are joined by our son Dom who has grown up here and also has first hand experience of several different co-working venues in London. Our fellow directors Kate Bradford and Paul Edwards are more recent arrivals, having spent their working careers in London at the top of their fields in market research and brand development.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
