Hidden Gardens of Grayshott

Mar 28, 2023

The Hidden Gardens of Grayshott Event in late May features an amazing array of Grayshott Gardens open for all!

At our event on Sunday 28th and Bank Holiday Monday 29th May you can explore the village of Grayshott and be inspired by gorgeous gardens, visit allotments, buy plants, attend family friendly events and experience one million years of local history!

Gorgeous gardens

Over two days you’ll discover a wide range of gardens from the courtyard to the stately, cottage to formal, contemporary to woodland and the intimate to the ambitious. Many of Grayshott’s gardens enjoy stunning views of the undulating countryside and benefit from the acidic, sandy soil.

Visit allotments and purchase plants

You’ll be able to visit our two thriving allotment sites in the village, which produce an array of home-grown fruit and veg, and several gardens will be selling plants so you can create your own Hidden Garden when you get home!

More than just gardens…

There are a number of family friendly and fun activities for all ages! Take the kids (and enthusiastic adults) to meet our reserved firefighters at the village fire station. Travel back in time and feel the heat at the forge with local swordsmith, Rod Hughes, and find the queen honeybee with master beekeeper, Brad Davis. You can also learn your warp from your weft with traditional weaving at Rose Glen’s workshop. And our village heritage group are on hand to share 1,000,000 years of local history. Plus, expert gardeners will be on hand with tips on how to get the best from your own garden.

Our junior visitors can join in the garden games at the Scout Hut, plant seeds at the School or search for Sirrel the Squirrel’s acorns and be rewarded with a take home prize from
Surrey Oaks Wealth and Financial Planning.

Teas and home-bakes to keep you going

With over 40 venues taking part you may want to rest awhile and take lunch at the Social Club in Hill Road or the Fox and Pelican pub, or be tempted by the fayre at either the historic Grayshott Pottery or Applegarth our local farm shop/restaurant.

Our army of volunteer bakers will be offering home-made afternoon teas at a selection of our open gardens including Huntington and Langham Estate, set in 32 acres of natural woodland with wonderful views over Grayshott and beyond to Butser Hill.

It takes a village to create an event like Hidden Gardens of Grayshott!

We need a few dozen willing worker bees to make our event a success. Many people have joined us year after year as its such a fun and friendly community event, so whether you fancy showcasing your baking skills or doing something behind the scenes, there are lots of ways to join in. Please go to our website volunteer page to find out more.

In the heart of Grayshott

Our local shops get into the spirit and decorate their shop windows with gardening themed displays and the beautiful St Luke’s Church will be filled with perfume from the floral displays on the theme of ‘Reflection’.

The Hidden Gardens of Grayshott Box Office will be central on the Millennium Green for the two days of the event and entry can also be purchased in advance from Saturday 29th April either online or in person (cash only), from Grayshott Post Office in Crossways Rd and Pins and Needles in Headley Rd.

Entry is £7.50 per adult, valid for both days, with under 16’s FREE, and includes wristbands and a FREE colour garden guide programme.

Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast, looking for something to entertain the family or just somewhere to enjoy an afternoon tea, Hidden Gardens of Grayshott has something for everyone.

The village is blessed with free parking (although restrictions do apply on the Monday), detailed in the ‘Garden Guide’ programme along with toilet facilities, picnic areas, an accessible route and a ‘paw friendly’ trail.

Event Sponsors

Thank you to our wonderful event sponsors for their support in making this event possible - Huntington and Langham Estate, Grayshott Pottery, Surrey Oaks Wealth and Financial Planning and WPR Estate Agents.

About Us

From a seed planted when a group of mums, bonded by a love of gardening, visited a nearby village’s open gardens event, Hidden Gardens of Grayshott came to full bloom 2005 with its first event.

Managed in the lead up to the event by a core volunteer team of just 6, the event takes place every two years, (except when interrupted by a global pandemic). All of the money raised is used to support a myriad of local, gardening themed projects that support our community.

Our first event raised £3000 which was distributed between the two village churches, the Village Hall and the Parish Council, and used to enhance and improve community planted areas.

Fast forward to 2019, when £15,000 was raised! In addition to the beautiful hanging baskets that adorn the retail roads in the village, which are supported by a grant from the Hidden Gardens of Grayshott, some of the other projects we’ve helped fund are the picnic planters at Grayshott School, the revamp of Grayshott Scout’s outside area and Grayshott’s first Walking Guide to our heritage trees.

Look out for the signage dotted around the village to see where some of the money has gone.

Our Village

Nestled in the Surrey/Hampshire hills, and situated in an area of outstanding beauty, surrounded by National Trust forest and health land, Grayshott is an award-winning village famous for being ‘the village that has everything’.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
