From Project Management in Financial Software to WFH

Hi, I run my own business, PM Getting It Done, which I have been told by my clients is a very accurate name for what I offer! I have always been organised since I was a child... laying out my clothes ready for the next school day and setting aside items to pack for holidays weeks in advance! I never knew what I wanted to do as a career so in the early 90's I ended up studying Computer Science at Kings College, London, mainly because I could see Information Technology would be used in all industries so it would give me a good foundation for whatever I decided to choose later. It was the best thing I ever did as it started my amazing journey...

After working for a year in London as a Computer Developer in Financial Software for Investment Banks, I was promoted to Technical Management and moved to our New York office which then lead me to Project Managing a team for a client in San Francisco - where I also happened to meet my future Scottish hubby!

After getting married and moving back to NYC, 9/11 hit and it made us realise we wanted to be closer to our families and start our own which lead us to the Godalming area. I continued to work in the city as a Project Manager until having my first and only child. After a few years and being encouraged by friends and family, I started an Indian Cookery business, Masala At Home which enabled me to be customer facing again as well as being around for my baby. I retailed spices online as well as offering evening cookery parties where I taught authentic Indian cooking in my customers' homes so they could share the experience with their friends and family. This set me up for a future in working from home and learning how to run my own businesses by building on the experiences and skills I had learnt in the city.

I taught myself how to build an e-commerce site, use social media, host and attend events and more as well as setting up a limited company and managing my own accounts. After deciding to go back into Project Management consultancy, I set up PM Getting It Done which in time lead me to developing websites and advising SME's on their digital presence as well as ad-hoc PM work for larger organisations.

I have always been very active in voluntary work - from being a class rep at Puttenham School and Chairing the PTA at Waverley Abbey to being a League Secretary for our local football club, Milford Pumas Youth FC, which I still do today. Giving back to the community is so rewarding as well as creating a supportive network around you. I regularly help at our local village community shop in Hambledon, Surrey and have voluntarily created an umbrella brand and digital presence for a community of small independent businesses, Coal Yard Creatives, to facilitate collaboration between them and the surrounding businesses and to encourage visitors to the area.

So being part of the 'This is Haslemere' project was a natural instinct for me as it focuses so heavily on what I have always been about personally and in my business - supporting your community and small independent businesses through knowledge & skills sharing.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
