Meet Jackie

May 22, 2021

Hi I am Jackie

I have always loved being active and being outdoors however it is only relatively recently that I became passionate about racing in mountain biking and triathlon. It was actually the challenges of becoming a mum that started my journey into sport.

Like so many new mums I struggled in the early years and found myself depressed and feeling very unhappy inside. I gave up my career to become a full time mum. To the outside world I had everything - happy marriage, two healthy and lovely boys, a nice home but like anyone who has suffered from depression it is not about what you have but something inside feels sad. With my husband's support he juggled work to enable me to take up yoga and be able to meet with the local running club, Haslemere Borders Athletic Club (HBAC), on one of their evening training sessions. Here I met lovely people and got stuck into running and into the cross country races on weekends. This gave me something as Jackie in my own right and not Jackie the mum. I never thought I would do a marathon or a triathlon as I wasn't a great swimmer but month by month and year by year I started saying “yes” to more and more challenges which culminated in competing in an Ironman competition and eventually qualify for the world championships in Hawaii.

It is through sport that I learnt such mental strength and saying yes to things has enriched my life in so many ways. It takes me on so many mini adventures and helps me to keep stretching myself and enabling me to step out of my comfort zone. I am lucky to meet wonderful people all the time.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
