Mindset - Mental Health Matters

Nov 22, 2021

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Matthew Mason-Hames about his passion for normalising mental health conversations in business & sport

What are the Mindset consulting service aims & objectives?

We want to normalise mental health conversation in Business and sport and for everyone to take mental health as seriously as they do physical health.

We offer all sorts of support from bespoke courses, public speaking through to more recognised training such as Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA) England and BSI ISO45003 (the first global standard giving practical guidance on managing psychological health in the workplace). We also offer project managing and advising on getting the best support systems in place for your teams. We want to prevent as many people as possible falling into poor mental health so that the existing crisis services are able to support those that need urgent help as well as possible, we are passionate about prevention first.

Meet Matthew

How did Mindset Sport come about?

Mindset Sport came about because of lock down and my own experience of ill mental health. I have a diagnosis of depression and generalised anxiety disorder. I had recently qualified as an MHFA England Instructor and was playing rugby at Haslemere, we talked about engaging with the players and supporting them through the covid lockdown and we started a few initiatives. Out of this grew the idea that all clubs should be able to access this support so I added the initiative to the website and it grew from there. We now have over 40 teams signed up to our website and another 400+ that follow us on social media, a rough estimate of our reach is about 1/2 million grass roots sports players.

How you can help grass roots sports clubs with mental health issues?

The role of Mindset Sport is to give people (coaches, parents and players) the ability to support and signpost people to the correct help. We have a website full of resources and can train people to be able to spot the signs of declining mental health and how to have the correct conversations to prevent any further harm. We have teamed up with loads of well known mental health brands and highlight all their services.

Has the service offered had to change since covid?

Yes a little, originally this was all conducted face to face but I now find myself able to train anyone anywhere and have trained people as far and wide and the Cayman islands, Canada and New Zealand. I don't think the needs have changed much but I definitely think that COVID has focused people's need and desire to understand more about mental health. Unfortunately it has also hit people's ability to fund training as its been a very tough few years for companies. We have also started our first men's peer to peer support group which is currently running on the 1st Monday of every month at Olivers Café.

How did the Community Kit bag come into being and how successful has it been?

The Community Kit bag is a project that aims to remove money as a barrier to sport. I realised that there are lots of barriers to getting the mental and physical health benefits of sport and that I may be able to do something about one of them. I spotted a few pairs of boots going for free on Facebook marketplace so asked if I could have them and just advertised them around my contacts. This then grew and grew and grew and we are now we have our first mobile shop which will be able to travel the country delivering kit to people who need it. We work on the basis that it's for everyone and you can take what you need and give what you can, if you can. If there are any clubs who want a visit then they can contact me and I will organise it.

What is 'For the 18'?

For the 18 is a sponsored walk starting on the 18th May 2022 when myself and a group of others will be walking between 18 sports clubs across the South of England, we hope to raise awareness of the mental health support that is available to clubs and also to raise funds to pay back the loan we have taken on the mobile shop for the Community Kit Bag. The walk will be about 150 miles and should take us about 5 days which will be hard going. we do need support from local business to help cover the costs of this walk so if anyone has any raffle prizes or thought on how they may be able to help then I would love to hear from them

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
