New Restaurant in Haslemere - Moma

Oct 12, 2021

What Haslemere has been waiting for...

We had a chat with the lovely team from MOMA to find out how they came about opening up a restaurant in Haslemere and their challenges.

Why Haslemere?

We were looking for somewhere to open MOMA and when we visited Haslemere we just fell in love. It’s a beautiful town with a real community feel. There’s also nothing like MOMA in the town, so it felt like a perfect addition.

Is this your first restaurant?

It is indeed our first restaurant.

Opening a restaurant during the pandemic must have presented some unexpected challenges?

Absolutely, there were of course delays to the renovations… which whilst frustrating totally understandable given the bigger picture. Then as we came closer to opening, it made sense to wait until after ‘freedom day’ to open.

How did you overcome those challenges?

We learnt very quickly to be resilient!! We also had huge support from our family and team

Where does the name MOMA come from?

The name MOMA comes from the Mediterranean name for Mum. We want guests to keep coming back to MOMA as they would their own Mum or Grandmother for the very best food and a welcoming atmosphere.

What or who inspired the menu?

Our chefs have worked all around the world and taken inspiration from their favourite cuisines to create our Mediterranean and Japanese Fusion menu. We are very passionate about supporting local and so our menus will reflect the very best produce we can source locally as we move through the seasons.

What word or words describes the menu/food?

Innovative with a tantalising twist.

Are you using local suppliers for produce?

Yes we are using a number of local suppliers for meat, fish and fruit and vegetables and gin!

Is it a restaurant for everyone i.e. a range of price options?

Our nibbles and starters range from £6 - £11.50

Mains £14.50 - £35

Desserts £5 - £12

Our menu is updated seasonally and we also have a set lunch menu available Tues-Sat 12-2:30pm alongside our a la carte.

Do you cater for vegans/vegetarians/gluten free etc?

We do!

What do you hope guests will say after visiting MOMA?

We really do hope guests will be WOW-ed after trying our food, keep coming back and recommend us to family and friends! We hope that guests will discover new flavours and trust us to take them on a delicious journey.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
