Schools Out - Half Term Activities to Keep Children Entertained

Feb 10, 2021

Fun, local activities to break up the homeschooling.

If your house is anything like mine, the kids are crying out for a break in the monotony of being in the house. The first time around, we entertained ourselves with the hose and the paddling pool, or going for long walks and eating ice creams, but this time that just ain't cutting it. The Beast from the East has added a little chill to the proceedings and they can't think of anything worse than going outside, which seems a fair response to the temperature!

With half term looming, many parents are left wondering how they will entertain their little cherubs while still juggling work commitments and the massive pile of laundry that has been neglected for the past few weeks. Luckily, there are some really fantastic companies locally which have us covered.

The South Downs Night Skies Festival should be a date in the dairy for anyone with kids with curious minds, and although the format is different this year, the idea remains the same. Live talks with Park Rangers on nocturnal wildlife, a link into the Surrey Downs Planetarium, quizzes and stargazing all from your own back garden.

Running between the 12th and 24th of February, you can find more information at www.southdowns.gov.uk/dark-night-skies/festival/

Haslemere Treasure Hunt

Treasuretrails.co.uk have a downloadable trail of Haslemere which begins on the High Street and takes you on a tour of just under 2 miles of Haslemere. Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
