Oct 28, 2021

We’ve had Hogs, Hares & Hounds and soon we will have Hens!

This is Haslemere is delighted to be supporting the preview launch of the Haslemere Hens at Haslemere Hall on Thursday 4th November!

Meet the people behind this exciting Community Arts initiative, enjoy brilliant music from the amazingly talented Scottish duo Elsa Jean McTaggart & Gary Lister while supporting Haslemere Hall to whom all proceeds from ticket sales will go.

Elsa & Gary debuted their album 'When the world stood still', 21 original tunes written on the Isle of Lewis over the summer of 2020, at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Their performances are heavily laden with instruments, stories, new tunes and includes haunting Celtic melodies, stunning Scottish airs, jigs, reels, waltzes and hornpipes.

It is set to be an evening of great music, so bring the family, and a chance for you to learn about how the Hens of 2022 will bring our community & businesses together again for good causes.

Where the Hens came from ... In 2017 the Haslemere Hogs Community Arts Initiative was launched, & for the next 3 years went from strength to strength, raising £150,000 for predominately local causes. The primary aim of the initiative was to promote Haslemere both locally and further afield, promote community engagement and raise funds for local causes and every year from 2017 to 2019 it achieved exactly that. 2020 & 2021 were hijacked by Covid but in 2022 the initiative will be back! Haslemere Hens is set to launch in May 2022 at Haslemere Museum so watch this space for more info!

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
