HHH Concerts - an exciting line up for February 2023

Jan 22, 2023

HHH Concerts have an exciting line up for the start of 2023

Since we launched This Is Haslemere, we have come to know HHH Concerts. This is a well-established chamber music society that was founded nearly 90 years ago. The organisation is a charity that promotes outstanding classical music performances locally. HHH also supports young prize-winning professional musicians who are starting out in their careers. They are committed to making high quality music accessible to all in Haslemere, with performances in St Christopher’s Church as well as in local schools and care homes.

Last year, local Conductor and Music Producer, Mark Stephenson, wrote a Q&A with concert pianist Ivana Gavrić before her HHH Concerts’ performance in St Christopher’s Church in March. Our local newspaper, The Haslemere Herald, wrote a review of The Van Kuijk Quartet’s return to Haslemere in November last year. Reading both articles, you gain a true sense that in St Christopher’s Church there is a great schedule of carefully chosen concerts and performers.

Coming up in February, HHH Concerts has a trio of lunchtime concerts offering three incredibly talented musicians the opportunity to perform in a venue with a wonderful acoustic.

Lunchtime Concerts

8th February 2023 at 1pm – Adam Heron

Acclaimed by The Sunday Times for the verve and spirit of his performances, Adam Heron is swiftly earning a reputation as one of the most innovative pianists of his generation. Winner of the 2020 Harriet Cohen Bach Prize, Adam rose to prominence following his television debut in 2018 as a BBC Young Musician piano finalist. Through his unique artistry, coupled with an innate public appeal and flair for communication, he has become a leading ambassador for classical music across the UK and abroad.

9th February 2023 at 1pm – Thomas Kelly

Thomas Kelly was born in November 1998. He started playing the piano at the age of three, and in 2006 became Kent Junior Pianist of the Year and attained the ABRSM Grade 8 with Distinction. Aged nine, Thomas performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 24 in the Marlowe Theatre with the Kent Concert Orchestra. After moving to Cheshire, he regularly played in festivals, winning prizes including in the Birmingham Music Festival, third prize in Young Pianist of the North 2012, and first prize in WACIDOM 2014. Between 2015 and 2021, Thomas studied with Andrew Ball, firstly at the Purcell School of Music and then at the Royal College of Music. Thomas has also gained inspiration from lessons and masterclasses with musicians such as Vanessa Latarche, Ian Jones, Tatiana Sarkissova, Paul Lewis, Mikhail Voskresensky and Dina Yoffe. Thomas has been studying with Dmitri Alexeev at the Royal College of Music since April 2021.

10th February 2023 at 1pm - Milda Daunoraite

Milda Daunoraite is a Lithuanian pianist, currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music under a full scholarship with Professor Tessa Nicholson. Milda is a prize-winner of numerous international piano competitions, including: Grand Prix in the 10th and 15th international piano competitions “Music Without Limits” in Lithuania which led her to perform in Frankfurt, Germany and Aarhus, Denmark; 1st prize in the 4th International Piano Competition in Stockholm; she is also a four-times prize-winner in the National and International Balys Dvarionas Competitions. In 2016, she won the ‘jury‘ prize in the PIANALE International Academy & Competition and was awarded a concert in Fulda, Germany as well as an opportunity to play with an orchestra.

Evening Concert

25th February 2023, 1pm - Indira Grier (cello) and Daniel Lebhardt (piano)

As well as this lunchtime piano, HHH Concerts welcome Indira Grier (cello) and Daniel Lebhardt (piano) to St Christopher’s Church. They will be playing Beethoven and Brahms piano sonatas.

Having won all avaiable prizes at the Junior Royal Academy of Music Indira Grier has gone to achieve many accolades including an invitation to the Verbier Festival Soloist Academy in 2021 & 2022 and a Gold Medal at the 2019 Vienna International Music Competition.

In 2014 Daniel Lebhardt won 1st Prize at the Young Concert Artists International auditions in Paris and New York. A year later he was invited to record music by Bartók for Decca and in 2016 won the "Geoffrey Tozer Most Promising Pianist" prize at the Sydney International Competition. In 2018 he has been signed for commercial management by Askonas Holt.

The New York Times reviewed one of Mr Lebhardt’s performances:

“Just playing [Liszt Sonata in B minor] commandingly, as Mr. Lebhardt did, is difficult enough. He brought narrative sweep and youthful abandon to the piece, along with power, poetry and formidable technique.”

HHH Concerts offer free tickets to anyone under 25 yrs old.

All concerts are held at St Christopher's Church, Wey Hill, Haslemere, GU27 1DD

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
