Little Lumpy Sportive - Charity Bike Ride 2023

Dec 03, 2022

Popular Little Lumpy sportive announces a new partnership with Undershaw Education Trust for 2023.

For the past 14 years, this major cycling event through beautiful countryside on the Surrey/Hampshire/West Sussex borders has been supporting local charities, raising more than £140,000.

In 2023, keen to keep their support local, the event will partner with specialist school Undershaw. The school is located just 2 miles away from the start of Little Lumpy. This partnership will focus on riders raising money for specialist outdoor play/sensory regulation equipment.

Emma West, Headteacher at Undershaw, said:

“Play apparatus, particularly that which encourages gross motor skill development, is a necessity in our environment where sensory regulation is a daily challenge for the majority of our students. This equipment that Little Lumpy will help fund is vital for our students as they strive to place themselves in the very best mental and emotional frame of mind for learning, be that academic or therapeutic.”

Ken Griffiths, Chairman of Little Lumpy, told us:

“Our Little Lumpy riders come back year after year to ride our three routes around the lanes of Surrey, West Sussex and Hampshire and to sample all our home baked cakes at our numerous feed stations. They know our volunteers by name and we recognise many riders when they arrive in Haslemere each year for the event. We are excited to be working with Undershaw and cannot wait to meet their own team of riders who will also be taking part in the event.”

Little Lumpy takes place on 21st May 2023 and booking is now open. There is an early bird discount available until 31st December 2022.

Our riders enjoy a warm welcome and there are home baked cakes at the feeding stations around the course. This is only possible due to the dedicated group of volunteers and Haslemere bakers, whose efforts seem to have become legendary, with the tempting selection probably the best to be found at any Cycling Sportive throughout the country.

In addition, at the start there is a free breakfast on offer, comprising tea / coffee plus a bacon butty or equivalent vegetarian option. At the finish, the bar will be open and a hot meal will be available at a small price. You can stay and linger to enjoy the company of your new found cycling friends and share your experience of what is one of the top charity Sportives in the South East of England.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
