HHH Concerts - what's happening in March 2023

Mar 12, 2023

HHH Concerts have more fabulous performances to look forward to in March 2023

We’ve written about HHH Concerts before here and you’ll see all their concerts listed in our Events calendar. This volunteer group is bringing the highest quality chamber music to Haslemere and their first lunchtime piano series last month was met with excellent reviews. This is what concertgoers said about the series:

"Hello....Meant to thank you again for inviting me along to the concert on Friday - it genuinely was one of the most mesmerizing piano performances I think I've been to...so THANK YOU! It's so easy to feel bogged down by workie things and not make time for lovely things like lunchtime concerts, but I'm so glad I did. .... Big thanks again.” CM

“Brilliant concert, a fab idea to have a lunchtime performance! I loved the explanation of the pieces, done with insight, a good sense of humour and humility.” RS

This March, HHH have two great concerts lined up. The first in their March schedule is the Novus String Quartet on 18th March at 7.30pm . It’s quite some feat for HHH Concerts to host a concert at St. Christopher’s Church sandwiched between two Wigmore Hall performances by this quartet! That is testament to the quality of performers that HHH is able to attract.

Established at the Korean National University of Arts in 2007, the Novus String Quartet is one of the leading chamber music ensembles in Korea, and first caused a sensation in Europe in 2012 when they earned the Second Prize in the string quartet category at the renowned ARD Music Competition. Two years later, the quartet were awarded First Prize at the Salzburg Mozart Competition where Lukas Hagen of the Hagen Quartet was the Jury Chair. Ever since, the quartet have been filling international concert halls and inspiring audiences and critics alike.

“The ensemble’s playing is incredibly solid and well-balanced. All four musicians perform at the same level and their music-making is enthralling.”

The Novus String Quartet programme at 7.30pm on 18th March 2023, St. Christopher’s Church:

Britten — Three Divertimenti for String Quartet
Janáček — String Quartet no. 1 ''Kreutzer Sonata''
Dvořák — String Quartet no. 12 in F major, Op. 96 ''American”

Written in 1923, Janáček’s piece was inspired not only by Tolstoy’s novella but also the composer’s passionate love for the much younger (and married) Kamila Stösslová. The other works, the Dvořák quartet and Britten’s three little pieces – date from 1893 and 1936 respectively.

The second in HHH Concerts’ March schedule will be on the 30th March 2023, when there will be an afternoon concert at 2pm at St. Christopher’s Church. Performing will be the Meraki Duo.

Formed in 2013, Meraki Duo enjoys exploring the diversity of repertoire available to the flute-guitar pairing while contributing new arrangements of their own. Meera Maharaj (flute) and James Girling (guitar) both studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, sharing a passion for chamber music that extends to jazz, Latin American and European folk, and works by contemporary composers.

They love performing in a wide variety of contexts and venues; recently, these have included King’s Place for London Guitar Festival, Swaledale Festival, St James’s Church in Piccadilly, Manchester Cathedral, and the Bridgewater Hall as part of Craig Ogden’s Guitar Weekend. They regularly perform for recital series in venues spanning from Cumbria to Cornwall. In 2019, they advanced to the final of the Royal Over-Seas League Competition (Mixed Ensembles category) in London. Meraki Duo were selected onto the International Guitar Foundation’s Young Artist Platform for 2019/20.

The Meraki Duo programme at 2pm on 30th March 2023, St. Christopher’s Church:

Dvořák (arr. Massey) — Sonatina in G Major
William Grant Still — Bayou Home
William Grant Still — If You Should Go
Astor Piazzolla — Cafe 1930
Astor Piazzolla — Nightclub 1960
Egberto Gismonti (arr. Richter) — Agua e Vinho
Hermeto Pascoal (arr. Girling) — Bebê

Alongside their concert schedule, they endeavour to bring performances into the wider community.

They are Live Music Now artists and often give workshops in schools across the country, exploring music through storytelling. HHH are so happy to be working with Meraki Duo before their afternoon concert to deliver a music workshop for pupils at Grayswood Primary School.

For further information about the Meraki Duo, please visit their website here. This Meraki Duo concert at 2pm on Tuesday 30th March is free to access. Donations are welcome (£15 suggested for adults), no cost for 8-15 year olds courtesy of the Cavatina Trust. HHH Concerts pays the professionals of Meraki Duo to bring this concert to Haslemere.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
