Meet Andy Crocker, MD of Grayshott Concerts

I was born and raised in a small village on the south coast of Cornwall. People who know me realise I still have a slight trace of the accent! My parents were not musical, but they encouraged my brother and I to play musical instruments, So I started playing the violin when I was six, and became competent enough to play in the Cornwall Symphony Orchestra as a teenager. My love of classical music was born!

After university and a long career working for IBM, I took early retirement, and my wife and I set up a company to provide coaching and training services to companies such as De Loittes, EY, and KPMG. My wife was a very competent musician when younger, playing a number of instruments, principally clarinet and viola. At home we loved listening to music – both classic and the great pop artists of the 60s and 70s – so we were thrilled when my wife’s brother introduced us to Grayshott Concerts about 12 years ago.

We were so impressed with the quality of the events that we became Friends, and also provided sponsorship through our company. I attended an AGM the year after and realised that this hugely successful organisation was entirely dependent on the work of its founders, Peter and Vivien Harrison, who did almost everything themselves to organise and stage the concerts. This raised a concern in my mind – what would happen to Grayshott Concerts when Peter and Vivien, whether through advancing years or illness, could not carry on?

So, I discussed this with them, and as a result my wife and I, with Peter and Vivien, began to structure a plan for the future, shaping an organisation structure, defining roles, seeking more volunteers, installing a new IT system.

When my wife became ill there was a hiatus in this activity. When my wife eventually passed away, Peter and Vivien invited me to become a trustee of Grayshott Concerts and continue the work we had been doing. This was 9 years ago, and the rest is history!

I am proud to be a part of Grayshott Concerts, add take a great delight to the pleasure we bring to our audiences, and the work we are doing to support music in the community. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
