What's your business' aim for 2022?

Here we are, at the end of the year - I know, where has the time gone!? - it's the perfect time for your business' New Year's resolution to be set. So, what's it going to be for your business? To expand? To sustain your revenue? To create a new look? To offer new products and services?

Whatever the aim, it's likely that to make it happen you'll need to embrace digital marketing. You know as well as I do that everyone is online these days, so it's a great place to market yourself.

How should you market your business online?

Although there's a lot of digital marketing options available for your business, you might not have the funds to invest in multiple options. But even if you do have a decent budget, to market your business online you still need to be smart in the way you invest into your marketing for the best possible return and chance of success.

In this blog I will give you advice on how to define what digital marketing approach will work for your business.

Here's how to prioritise your digital marketing efforts

Want to know what I say to any of my clients when they need advice on their digital marketing? My advice to them is this - always think about your customers:

  • Who are they?
  • Where do they consume information?
  • Where do they go when they need answers?
  • Where do they hang out?
  • How do they shop?

Ultimately, what your 'perfect' customer wants is more important than what you want to do from a marketing perspective.

So, my best piece of advice to you is to create a customer persona - or multiple personas if you want to appeal to different people. If you don't know what a customer persona is, it's essentially a profile of the kind of person you want to appeal to for your services or products.

Once you know who you're looking to appeal to you can then weigh up where you should be putting your time, money and effort.

Before deciding your digital marketing, take the time to understand your customers. Easily do this with surveys, past marketing results and make sure to create customer personas. You may need to invest in some professional market research, or you can use social media polls, customer surveys and industry reports.

Matching up your business objectives with the right online marketing approach

Marketing to increase revenue

You will want to consider a variety of marketing approaches, including:

Search marketing (Search Engine Optimisation/SEO) - The process of making sure your website ranks highly on major search engines for relevant searches from customers. This is a long term approach to make sure you rank for the forseeable future.

Paid advertisement - Similar to SEO above but a sure-fire way to appear at the top of search results by paying to be at the top. This can be expensive but it could be worthwhile if you can achieve a great return on investment for your products/services.

Social media marketing - Regularly posting quality content on your social media profile will help to grow your following and therefore your customer base.

Email marketing - There was a time where marketers gave up on email marketing, but it's back with a vengeance. Email marketing is hugely popular and an effective way to reach out to new and existing customers. It's an opportunity to up-sell and create a brand to remember and follow. All you need is a decent list of contacts (and to continue building it over time) and awesome email copywriting to really appeal to your audience.

Content - Whatever method of marketing you choose you will need to create engaging content that appeals to your target audience. Without a quality message you will struggle to convert people into customers.

Marketing to expand the business

Consider:

  • Search marketing
  • Content
  • Website design (offer a better user experience online with design and content)
  • Social media marketing
  • Paid advertising
  • Email marketing & copywriting

Marketing to create a new brand

Consider:

  • Logo/brand design
  • Website design
  • Content (focusing on your new brand's tone of voice)

Marketing to improve your customer satisfaction

Consider:

  • Content
  • Website design
  • User experience (Design and content)
  • Consultancy (Have a creative outsider provide ideas and support)

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
