Meet Catherine

Feb 12, 2021

Hi, I’m Catherine, I moved to Haslemere three years ago with my husband and two children from Scotland. I’m originally from Manchester.

My professional background is in operational performance and service improvement. I’ve worked for a number of organisations in manufacturing, construction and banking over past 25 years. In recent years I have focussed on an area I’m particularly passionate about, improving company culture, reducing silos and inefficiency in organisations and supporting the growth of people and teams through collaborative working and honest, open communication. I have always felt that people should be happy in their work and the most destructive things  to an organisational culture are lack of trust, excessive ego, fear, bureaucracy and silo working.

After a mid life crisis I have taken a change in direction in my life and started studying Fine Art at UCA Farnham in 2020.

I’m passionate about the community I live in and I love meeting new people, learning new things and having fun. After making a change I was keen to find out how I could get involved in voluntary activity in Haslemere and how I could connect with the community around me.

That led me on a bit of a voyage of discovery (something for another blog, another time). and setting up a pilot project called Haslemere Co-Lab with an amazing group of people I didn’t know until last year!

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
