Meet Claire

Feb 14, 2021

A Haslemere resident since I first started school, I’ve seen the town grow and change a great deal over the years. What hasn’t changed, is the sense that there is something very special about Haslemere, from its picturesque High Street to the beautiful countryside that surrounds us. I met some of the Co-Lab team whilst walking with them last Summer and was immediately drawn to Catherine’s idea of facilitating collaboration within our community. I remember fiercely stating that we needed to create a website, to have a true online hub for the community: I had no idea this would become a reality so quickly!

Aside from input on the initial design and branding of the website, my main involvement has been encouraging local businesses I know to register, working with Caroline and Laura to ensure that business entries look great, liaising with business owners for additional information or images; all to ensure that our fabulous local businesses are showcased in the best way possible. When I’m not working on this website or doing my day-job, I love to be out walking or cycling, ideally near the coastline somewhere.

I’m passionate about supporting local independent business. Independent businesses give you individual products and a personal touch. We’re hearing stories of people ordering over the telephone from certain High Street shops (ssh…R. Miles!) who deliver to the door 40 minutes later. I made a couple of late-night purchases for Christmas via the Virtual High Street Haslemere, which were on my doorstep by 9am the next day. These independent businesses could not be happier with all of our purchases, and I am delighted to have been able to support them. I’ll continue to work with the team on uploading business registrations to this website, so if yours isn’t listed, let's get you registered

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
