Meet Jane

I have spent my entire life in Haslemere, in fact my Mother was born in Hammer in the house where I grew up - and she still lives there! I started school in Camelsdale, went on to Midhurst and then to West Sussex College of Design (Worthing) to study Graphics. After graduating I started work in central London with an upcoming design company and helped to grow the business into a very successful business producing design solutions for many household names.

These days, I work from home in Haslemere, with both my original clients and with local companies. I live just off the High Street, with James, my partner of many years, Bentley and Birkin our two cats and a whole host of marine creatures (including Nemo) in a reef aquarium.

I’ve always loved taking pictures, starting with using my Dad’s old Kodak Box Brownie on childhood holidays, through many film cameras until the wonders of digital came along. I got my first digital camera in August 2002 and loved having the ability to take lots of images, to have instant access and be able to edit, manipulate and print them at home. I have stuck to bridge cameras rather than DSLRs as I like their flexibility, compactness and long zoom range and I’m prepared to lose a bit of quality for convenience. These days I use my phone camera a lot - they say the best camera is the one you have with you on the day.

Alongside photography, I’m into lots of different arts and crafts, love wildlife, trips to the sea and our other great interest - classic cars, owning a 1958 Renault 4CV and a 1962 Fiat Multipla. We are involved in many things at Goodwood and personally organise the popular Haslemere Classic Car Show which will hopefully be back in 2022.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
