Haslewey Community Centre

A community centre with a wide range of daily activities

The Haslewey is a non-government funded community centre. It offers a wide range of daily activities and has an on site cafe open from 9 am until 3 pm each day. Always offering a warm welcome and lots of fun activities, the centre strives to offer a place for people of all ages to come and enjoy.

The Haslewey is a completely independent organisation. It is a registered charity that runs as a business. To be able to continue to run to benefit the local community, they are heavily dependent on income they generate from their services and events.

How they work:

As well as running regular events and activities, The Haslewey also offer several services to the community in our premises. For example, the community centre is home to a community Post Office, hair design studio and podiatry service. They also organise a Community Meals Service for people who need help to ensure they have a nutritious, freshly-cooked meal to enjoy in the comfort of their own home.

How to help:

The Haslewey relies on a a team of dedicated volunteers to help run the community centre. They have a variety of volunteering opportunities. For all roles, full training is provided. People can choose to volunteer either on a regular or occasional cover basis.

Reception volunteers sit on the reception desk and are the face of The Haslewey. They help with telephone enquiries, book appointments, greet customers and give a warm welcome to visitors.

Volunteers are also needed to help run the Wey Terrace and cafe. Open from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, the cafe is a place for people of all ages and from all walks of life. Volunteer roles at the cafe include the setting up and clearing down of the dining room, waiting on tables and the making and serving of drinks. Volunteers are also required to assist in the kitchen either with the food preparation or the washing up!

The Haslewey are also always in need of Community Meals volunteers. These are volunteers who go out to visit people in their homes, delivering community meals to vulnerable people living in Haslemere, Grayshott, Grayswood, Witley and Milford. For the clients who depend on this service, a quick chat and contact with a friendly face can make all the difference to the enjoyment of their day.

Volunteers can also join the fundraising committee at The Haslewey. This committee organises and runs events to raise funds for the community centre. Volunteers are also needed to assist the fundraising committee at events. Roles include waiters, bar staff, stewards, ticket sellers and much more.

Finally, since The Haslewey needs constant maintenance, volunteers who have experience with plumbing, electrics, carpentry or other practical skills, are also very welcome.

As a thank you for their support, Haslewey offers all their volunteers a 10% discount at the café.

If you are interested in volunteering at The Haslewey please give the office a call on 01428 652 505 between 10 am and midday from Monday to Friday. Alternatively, you can call in at their office at the Methodist Church during those hours and give your details to the duty officer. Or send them a message from the contact page on their website.

The Haslewey is a Registered Charity, No. 1077316. If you would like to make a monetary donation, you can do so via their website at https://haslewey.org/donate/

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
