Ensure Healthy Balances

The transition from son, daughter, spouse, to primary carer is a natural one since for most of us, our lives are bookended by dependence on family members. We all hope to provide the very best care for our loved ones as they enter their later years, and it is a privilege to honour those who have raised and cared for us in our own infancy and beyond.

That said, our advice is to “go at your own pace and don’t let providers rush you into a decision. Every journey should be bespoke to your family and that takes time.” It can be helpful to put boundaries in place about what is, and is not, possible as family members. Sometimes the undivided support of a trained professional is better placed to take on the personal aspects of care, allowing those nearest and dearest to remain in that vital familial capacity enjoying quality time with those they love. Gemma comments, “be honest with your loved one about how you are feeling.”

Embrace Changing Needs

Although the day-to-day reality for someone can remain stable for several months and even years, change can also occur rapidly and unpredictably; forcing networks to respond quickly. On this journey there is no perfect rulebook, but our advice is to look for a care provider you can put your trust in and “do life together”. Gemma says, “as long as everyone is safe, we have no limits and can do anything.” She continues, “what I find most rewarding is when we come alongside someone, help them find their purpose and get their sparkle back.”

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
