Reflexology - relax and let your feet do the talking!

Do you know about Reflexology? Relax and let your feet do the talking!

Sarah Jones runs SJ Reflexology and is a local Reflexologist based in Liphook. Here she discusses the holistic therapy and how it may benefit you.

I first started having Reflexology treatments myself 20 years ago and found it fascinating how the therapist could pinpoint things that were out of balance in my body through my feet! This started my passion for the therapy and when I was trying to fall pregnant with my first daughter, I decided to have a complete career change and retrained as a Reflexologist. I still have just as much passion for it now as I did then and every time I do a treatment, whether on an existing or new client, I am still totally amazed by this incredible therapy. I have undertaken additional training in maternity reflexology and can treat clients from early pregnancy, right through to their due dates and beyond.  I am currently studying Reflexology in Fertility and hope to complete the course by this Summer. I also offer Indian Head massage which is a very relaxing standalone treatment or one that some clients combine with their reflexology for an indulgent 1.5 hours of relaxation.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that uses massage and pressure to specific points on the feet to balance the whole body. The theory behind Reflexology is that different points on the feet and lower legs correspond with certain areas in the body. The reflex point for the shoulder, for example, is the small pad under the little toe and if a client has said they have very tight shoulders then I would expect to feel that tightness in that part of the foot. As a therapist, when you find areas out of balance you then pay particular attention to those areas during the treatment. Reflexology aids relaxation, helps to release tension, can improve mood, aids sleep and improve wellbeing.

Lots of people when they first come for an appointment worry about their feet and always apologise for them, but I am being honest when I say I haven’t had a pair of feet put me off yet! Another common thought is that people will find the treatment ticklish, and I think people are really surprised that it doesn’t tickle at all and even those with the most ticklish feet relax within seconds of the treatment beginning.

Some clients come for a treatment for an existing issue whether it be stress, anxiety, digestive issues, hormonal issues or general aches and pains, and others come for their general wellbeing. The majority of my clients will come every 4-6 weeks for a treatment, sometimes it will be more regular to start with, but it depends on the client and what works best for them. Other clients may come more sporadically when they feel like they need to relax, switch off and destress. I have seen a big increase in the number of clients over the past year who have come along and said that their companies are investing in employee wellbeing and so they can have a course of something like Reflexology reimbursed by their company. I think it is fantastic to know that many employers are really taking wellbeing so seriously.

The Treatment

When you first come for a treatment I will complete a consultation form with you to understand a bit about your lifestyle and any pre-existing medical conditions. The treatment itself is 1 hour and I like to start with some relaxation techniques. I will then work all the reflexes on the foot in a particular sequence, feeling for any areas that feel out of balance and working to balance them. At the end of the session I will talk through with you anything that I felt was out of balance and you should leave feeling totally relaxed! I offer treatments from my treatment cabin in Liphook and have designed it so that it creates a feeling of calm and tranquillity. My clients often say they have the best nights sleep after a Reflexology session!

I am a full member of the Association of Reflexologists which means that I had to obtain a certain level of qualification initially and then I also undertake a number of hours of Continued Professional Development (CPD) each year.  I also have to follow the Associations Code of Practice and Ethics. During the past year the AOR have provided us with risk assessments for treating during the COVID-19 pandemic and I follow a strict process to ensure that I am a COVID safe business.

I am very excited to have reopened my business on the 12th April in line with the government guidance and I can’t wait to see all my clients. If you would like to have a chat about Reflexology in more detail and how it may benefit you then please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
