Therapy Garden

Feb 21, 2024

a charity using gardening to generate positive change

The Therapy Garden was established in 1998. Its aim is to use the healing power of horticulture to connect with vulnerable members of our community. It is a horticulture and education charity that uses gardening to generate positive change. They work with adults and teenagers with learning difficulties, physical disabilities and mental health challenges. They also offer school-age teenagers interventional education opportunities. The Therapy Garden is based in the village of Normandy.

What they do:

The Therapy Garden works to have a positive and significant impact on the lives of people facing challenges in life. This may be by giving a sense of purpose to children with special needs, by reducing the isolation of a young person living with autism or perhaps helping someone older living with dementia. It can also build confidence in adults recovering from a stroke or can help to equip young people who have additional learning needs for a possible future in the workplace. The Therapy Garden really can change lives for the better. They do this by creating a safe place to enjoy the power of gardening and to connect with nature.

How they work:

The Therapy Garden is open 5 days a week, Monday to Friday from 9.15 am until 2.30 pm. Adult clients attend all year round but their teenage clients only attend during school term times.

The Therapy Garden is not generally open to the public, although they do have several open days during the year.

How to help:

The Therapy Garden are looking for Client Support Volunteers to assist in the garden alongside their horticulturists. Volunteers work in the garden with clients, helping them with various tasks such as planting, harvesting, pruning and mowing to name a few, under the guidance of their team of horticulturists. Volunteers would be involved in supervising  adult clients and teenagers who may have a variety of disabilities.

As well as general gardening work, volunteers will be assisting clients, both children and adults, with the opportunity to achieve a qualification in horticulture.

Other tasks their volunteers help with include general garden maintenance, DIY tasks or craft and cookery activities.

No gardening experience is required, just the ability to get along with others and muck in! This can be a great stepping stone to further education or work opportunities.

At present, the Therapy Garden are looking for volunteers who can offer a regular weekly commitment.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
