Where to volunteer in & around Haslemere


Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, but of course it’s also the perfect way to meet people too. There are 100s of local organisations that you can volunteer with, many of which are listed below.


The Guildford based charity Voluntary Action South West Surrey (VASWS) is a Council for Voluntary Service & advertise specific volunteer positions within charities. David Rose of VASWS explains what a critical role volunteering has in local communities: "Volunteers from all age groups are an invaluable part of any community and those who volunteer gain very discernable benefits.' So whether you have just one hour a week to spare, are retired and would like to contribute more time or need to complete the volunteering element of your Duke of Edinburgh award, volunteering helps everyone!

Community Support & Charities

This is Haslemere - We are a small team of volunteers who add community content to this website and post on Facebook groups as well as getting out in the community to find valuable information to benefit people of all ages. If you think you can spare as little as an hour a week please get in touch.


Haslemere Food Bank - our local food bank seeks volunteers to help with sorting and distribution and drivers to deliver to our clients with no transport.

 

Care In Haslemere - Patient Transport Charity for the Haslemere Area. If you like driving, meeting people, and have the time, you could find volunteering for Care in Haslemere is satisfying and rewarding. Volunteers are asked to give just a few hours of their time, time which is given freely, but never leaving them out of pocket.

 

Hoppa - this charity provides a friendly and supportive community transport service for those in Waverley rural areas in need of public transport living remotely or with access difficulties.

 

Holy Cross Hospital - volunteers at the hospital support patients to engage with activities such as art, music, gardening, quizzes and puzzles for leisure or as therapy or rehabilitation. They also drive the minibus to take patients shopping, visits to the theatre or their seaside bungalow at Selsey.


St John’s Ambulance - this volunteer-led health and first aid charity - responding to emergencies, supporting communities and saving lives – seeks first aiders, hospital care volunteers.


Haslemere Information Hub - The iHub at the station has volunteering opportunities for tourism advisors and platform gardeners.


Haslewey Community Centre - this community centre in Haslemere relies on a dedicated army of volunteers to help run our community centre. They have volunteering opportunities in several different roles.

 

Haslemere Charity Shop - this shop sells good quality clothing, books, bric-a-brac and small electrical items. All proceeds go to local causes. Volunteers sort donations, steam and price goods, work the till and complete end of day paperwork.

 

Cancer Research Shop - charity retailer offers donated, secondhand items including books, clothing and household goods. Their volunteers sort stock, manage the till, arrange window displays, and maintain a tidy shop.

 

Age UK’s Haslemere Vintage Store - this new style of charity shop - your local Vintage Store - opened in Haslemere in 2022. Their team is actively recruiting stock volunteers.

 

Scope - this High Street charity shop hires customer service volunteers to help raise vital funds for their work towards achieving everyday equality for disabled people. 


The Hunter Centre - a day centre providing care for those with dementia and offers support for their families and carers.


Tapestry Day Club - a new model of support to those living with early stage dementia. Volunteers are needed in the Haslemere & surrounding villages. 


Citizens Advice Waverley – Haslemere Branch. A free, confidential, independent and impartial advice and support for people experiencing problems. There are many volunteer roles and you’re sure to find one that fits your skills, availability, experience and/or interests. By joining us you become part of highly respected advice network dedicated to working to improving the lives of people in our community.

 

Haslemere & District Community Hospital League Of Friends - The League of Friends relies on the support of the community and is always pleased to hear from those who wish to join, to become a volunteer, or indeed serve on the Committee. 


The Fernhurst Hub - Many of the volunteers give their time with regular or occasional behind the counter duties helping with sales, cafe service or answering phone or visitor enquiries - but support can be given in many other ways. 


Chiddingfold Village Hall - Volunteer Secretary to attend meetings and take minutes (a couple of hours a month) & Buildings Manager (can be a Trustee or a volunteer) to help deal with the maintenance schedules for the village hall. Please contact Valissa using email link.


Liphook Food Bank - Provides weekly food parcels and signposting advice to a broader range of agencies and services to support those families and individuals who are struggling financially.

The Green Hub - The Green Hub Project for Teens is a local community project aimed at promoting the wellbeing of teenagers’ mental health through social and therapeutic horticulture. At the heart of the project is our beautiful, walled garden in Milford where we host groups of teens each weekend, 12 months of the year. Garden, event & admin volunteers are always needed.


Reconnections - working with people aged 65 and over in the Guildford and Waverley area (including Haslemere, Fernhurst, Grayshott) to help people connect with what is important to them, as well as to tackle loneliness and social isolation. New volunteers are always welcome.

Environment & Gardening

Transition Haslemere - this local voluntary group takes action on climate change and the long-term sustainability of our environment for ourselves, our children and the generations to come.

 

Wey Hill In Bloom - the team plants up and maintains the flower tubs and verges to brighten up the area. They are looking for volunteer gardeners.


COPSE. Community Orchard Project South East (COPSE) is a social enterprise based in Haslemere set up to engage with other community organisations and landowners to create and enhance community orchards in and around Waverley, Surrey and further afield in the South East. Volunteers dig, plant, and maintain.


Love Haslemere Hate Waste - this charity seeks repairers, menders, litter pickers, waste project coordinators, social media experts and administrators for their campaign to reduce waste of all kinds.


National Trust Black Down & Hindhead Supporters - this group supports and helps the National Trust enhance its local properties and landscapes. 

Youth

A Place To Be - our local youth club meets every week at Shottermill Junior School on a Friday evening and is looking for volunteer youth workers and administrators.

 

Haslemere & District Scouts - leaders & helpers are always wanted around the District.


Brownies, Girl Guides - Find your place in a team of inspirational women, sharing their skills and passions with girls in a local unit - all while benefiting from the adventure and opportunities guiding has to offer.


Clubs, Beavers, Scouts - 7 local Scout Groups (young people aged 6-14 years) and  2 Explorer Scout groups (14-18 years) could use your time, skills and help! With over 100 youngsters on waiting lists for Haslemere's various Beaver, Cubs and Scouts sections, the District Team wants to make it possible for them to benefit from scouting as well.


Air Cadets - The Air Cadets offers young people from all walks of life a chance to get active, learn new skills and make new friends in an inspirational and safe environment.


Army Cadets - The benefits of volunteering with the Army Cadet Force are varied, from learning new skills, meeting people, taking on challenges and gaining valuable experience. You do not need a military background and we will provide all the training you require.


Haslemere Youth Hub - A charity youth community centre for preschoolers through to teens and young adults. 

Art, Culture & Entertainment

Haslemere Library - our local library is looking for volunteers to help with rhymetime, storytime and an adult reading group.

 

Haslemere Fringe and Haslemere Festival - these annual events require event marshals, litter pickers, bartenders, stewards and ticket sellers.

 

Haslemere Museum - Haslemere’s award-winning museum has a long tradition of volunteer support. Volunteering opportunities include greeting visitors, providing educational workshops for children, cataloguing collections and gardening.

 

Haslemere Hall - our local cinema and theatre venue seeks ushers and bartenders.


The Arts Society Haslemere - The Arts Society's Heritage Volunteers help to conserve our British heritage, working as stewards and guides, helping with preventative conservation and in non-specialist but vital ways caring for both public and private collections.



Sports & Activities

Little Lumpy Charity Bike Ride - this annual charity sportive takes place in May every year and is actively recruiting volunteer bakers, event stewards and registration assistants.



Animals

Haslemere Cats Protection - without volunteers, Haslemere Cats Protection simply wouldn't exist. Their wonderful volunteers are a diverse group with a shared love of cats who fit volunteering around their home lives and personal commitments. Whether minutes or months, days or decades, any time you kindly give to volunteering in Haslemere will improve the lives of the cats and kittens locally. 

 

Helping Hounds -  With the help of our volunteers and supporters, we are able to bring dogs to the UK and find their forever homes. With your help, we can be there for dogs in need.


Voluntary Action South West Surrey

VASWS supports voluntary groups across the Waverley Borough. They also connect companies with community organisations to work on planned projects & help those lacking the confidence to apply for volunteer roles themselves.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
