Waverley Countryside Volunteers

Leading practical conversation tasks across waverley

Waverley countryside volunteers assist with practical conservation tasks across the Waverley borough all year round. They are involved in the management of many of Waverley's fantastic open spaces.

What they do:

Everyone in Haslemere has easy access to numerous beauty spots such as Blackdown and the Punchbowl. But these areas don’t look after themselves so it’s up to Waverley’s countryside rangers and their team of volunteers to carry out practical conservation tasks throughout the year.

How they work:

The Waverley Countryside Rangers, with the help or volunteers, carry out a range of tasks throughout the year. These include removing invasive plants, improving paths, planting trees, hedge-laying and even hay-making.

How to help:

No prior experience is needed, just plenty of enthusiasm and some elbow grease!

By volunteering, you’ll be making a real difference to the animals and plants living in our local wildlife habitats, while meeting new people interested in looking after our countryside. And then there’s the added benefit of all that fresh air and keeping fit while carrying out your tasks.

All volunteers will be under the supervision of the countryside rangers. They will also provide all tools and protective equipment needed. They will also explain how to use hand tools safely and will share the important reasons for the work being carried out.

Everyone is welcome to volunteer to help with their conservation tasks. Please note that under 16's must be accompanied by an adult.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
