10 Simple Sustainable Living Hacks

Mar 05, 2021

Easy swaps and tips to live more sustainably

Tause has some simple suggestions here for you!

Use cleansing bars rather than bottled shampoo and shower gels.

Shop No Plastic is a local retailer offering some great eco-cleansing bars for face, hair and body and you can take your empty, hard to recycle beauty bottles back to Ark who will recycle them and give you a 10% discount off your next purchase

Take your reusable shopping bag shopping, to avoid using plastic bags.  Betty & Maude Vintage Home sells a fabulously cheerful striped eco shopper or you could buy your very own Love Haslemere Hate Waste tote!

Use beeswax wrap instead of clingfilm: Bizzie Beeswraps does a great selection of washable sandwich wraps.

Don’t buy more food than you need, and freeze leftover perishables rather than throw them away. Did you know that you can freeze spinach, eggs (beat them first), hummus, herbs/chilli and cheese?

Use your own reusable cup for takeaway coffee – Sass & Spirit does a very stylish cup.

Avoid buying fruit, vegetables or meat wrapped in plastic. You can shop for fresh produce at Crossways Fruiterers and pick up locally sourced, delicious meat from Seabright's.

Replace plastic straws with reusable metal straws, like these ones, again from Shop No Plastic.

Buy wooden toys for children; they are often far nicer than plastic ones, and better for the planet.  Past and Present has a lovely selection to choose from. You can also find lots of used toys, books and other items on the Buy Nothing Haslemere Facebook group

Make your own cleaning products, or head to the refill station at Apothecary 27

Recycle your glass candle jarAroma Skies offers a small discount off your next purchase when you return one of their jars.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
