AppArt Art & Sculpture Exhibition at Prior’s Field School, Godalming

Haslemere is the home of AppArt and we have always enjoyed the support of local artists from the area. This year we have some talented artists applying for the first time as well as a cohort of regulars.

Soraya French, President of the Society of Women Artists will open AppArt's Easter Art Exhibition & Sculpture Trail at Prior’s Field School Godalming on Saturday 1st April.

Soraya has been a regular exhibitor at AppArt over many years and she works in watercolours, oils, pastels, acrylics and mixed media with a variety of subject matters such as musicians, café scenes and African market scenes amongst others.

Meet Evelyn & Gwyn

Roger Dellar is one of the best known artists in the area and he has a national reputation and won many prestigious awards. He likes to paint on the spot (en Plein). He warms to subjects that are more a challenge of colour, light and high activity than atmospheric distant remote vistas. Roger is a keen observer of people in their environments and this is a constant source of inspiration for him. “Preparing for rehearsals” is his interpretation of a ballet class in nearby Headley. He has a busy schedule of demonstrations and shows his work in national exhibitions and is Honorary President of Haslemere Arts Society.

Another local artist is photographer Peter Searight of “The Remarkable Studio”. Besides his professional career that includes portraiture he is adept at capturing dramatic landscapes using black and white photography as his medium. The Scottish mainland and islands are one of his favourite haunts and “Touching the Heavens” is a good exemplar of his work.

Another relatively new artist to AppArt is Emma Godden. She is a ceramicist and teacher living in Hindhead. Her time is split between making her own ceramics and teaching pottery to adults.

Her inspiration comes from nature, including wildflowers and seed-heads that she finds while walking in the local countryside, as well as flowers and birds in her garden.  On show will be  groups of her skilfully crafted seed heads that are embellished with subtle glazes that delight and would certainly grace any flower border.

Plants and trees and still life are popular themes for Regine Berry. In recent times she has added gold and silver leaf to her paintings to great effect. “Song Bird Jug and Sunflowers” is a good example of her talent and technique. “Thorn Tree” by contrast using limited tones and is a detailed bronze watercolour.

Wendy Richards is a versatile painter who subjects are wide ranging from London and coastal scenes to local landscapes. She works mainly in oil using a palette knife thus creating texture and depth to her work. She “loves to create something with meaning to her but then to pass it on with a new life to another. Paint – the colour, the texture, the way it moves across the canvas – a limited palette with infinite possibilities”. Her work selected for AppArt includes “Racing the Storm” that depict sail boats in gusty sea conditions and “Edge of the Birch Wood” a much more delicate and colour infused scene that could be anywhere in the Surrey countryside.

Anna Austin’s preferred painting method is abstract land and seascape in oil or acrylic paint using a palette knife as well as brushes. “Walking the Dog” is an impressionistic example of her technique. She continues to explore and experiment in various ways and learn from all the great artists that have gone before.

One of the benefits of running AppArt Exhibitions and Sculpture Trails is that Evelyn and Gwyn Phillips have developed their own small gallery and sculpture garden in their home in Grayswood.

Each year we add to our collection and last year it was “Flow” by Andrew Lee. Andrew has created a mobile sculpture of stainless steel “telltales” that react to the wind, sun and rain to create ever changing vistas that we can view from our studio.

As part of Grayswood’s Village Open Gardens our sculpture garden will be open to the public on Sunday 11th June.

AppArt was founded by Grayswood-based couple Evelyn and Gwyn Phillips to encourage interest in the visual arts in the Surrey area. 2023 will be their 27th year of curating and arranging art exhibitions and sculpture trails in Surrey. Evelyn is responsible for the placing of the artworks in the indoor exhibition of over 500 works and the sculpture trail of at least 100 large sculptures, whilst Gwyn is responsible for the publicity and installation.

AppArt will open daily from Saturday 1st April and run until Saturday 15th from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
