Emergency food support for families & individuals in the local area

Haslemere Food Bank is an independent Trust providing food support to families and individuals in need in Haslemere and the surrounding area. The Food Bank collects donations of food and toiletries from the local community and prepares food packs for those referred to it by agencies actively supporting people in food poverty. It is a registered charity, run entirely by volunteers and dependent on the local community for support.

How they work:

Access to the Food Bank is by referral only. It is important to us that other agencies and voluntary groups are also caring for those who come to the Food Bank. Once someone has been referred to the Food Bank and has been given a referral form, there is no further assessment when they come to the Food Bank to collect.

Anyone who is in need of food support should therefore seek out one of the food bank's referral agencies (it is often a person or place which is already known to them) and ask to be referred. If people know of someone who they feel would benefit from a referral, they should encourage them to seek a referral agency. For more information, contact the Food Bank directly, preferably by email: haslemerefoodbank@gmail.com . It is hoped that the referral agency will be able to offer specific help towards resolving other issues.

How to help:

The Food Bank collects ‘dry foods’ (tins, packets, jars, bottles, etc) and toiletries through their various collection points. If donating, please avoid large packs or tins. Whilst large amounts are very generous to donate, if in large packets or tins, they are too large for the packs we provide and too heavy for people to carry away. We do not open or split containers.

From these donations, food packs are prepared for distribution to families and individuals in need of food support who are referred to us by a variety of agencies. Food packs are designed to provide either a family or a single person with emergency supplies to sustain them for three days.

The Food Bank tries to respond to the need for vegetarian, free-from, etc, items but can only hand out the donations received. People need to take responsibility to check that everything in their pack is suitable for them.

The Food Bank does not assess the needs of those who come for support but relies on those agencies which refer people to it.

The Food Bank also has a Facebook page which is regularly updated with items in most need. If you would prefer to make a cash donation please use the The Food Bank Just Giving page.  Cash donations are used to buy any dry foods out of stock.

Haslemere Food Bank Trust is a Registered Charity, No. 1193577 & has Gift Aid status, anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can do so via the Food Bank Just Giving page .

The Food Bank is extremely grateful to all their donors, volunteers, collection points, referrals agencies, Haslemere Methodist Church, and to all their supporters.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
