Lauren Baker - Artist

Lauren's first ever exhibition, New Horizon's, is a great success!

I am incredibly humbled by the support and kindness of strangers. My ‘New Horizon’s’ art exhibition at Haslemere Museum in June 2021 was incredibly well received.

It was the culmination of two years of both emotional and physical healing after a trauma in 2019, which led me to meet a very special lady by the name of Caroline and she became my saving grace.

Heading towards the start of my University career, my life took a sharp turn in direction, and I was led down a path I hadn’t envisioned. This for me, was a gap year, but I embraced this precious time to immerse myself in my passion of art, to heal and to grow.

I was introduced to Caroline at a crucial time where I was most vulnerable. I can only describe Caroline as my saving grace and warm embrace during those dark and foggy months. She herself, was an incredible artist, which was made apparent during the days that we would avidly paint together. It was a kind of therapy for the both of us - an escapism as we forgot all that was going on around us.

Throughout her cancer treatment, Caroline would always find the time and strength, to paint with me, and we’d express ourselves, brush to canvas. We had built such a beautiful bond through our love of painting, and that will always remain with me forever more. Through my art, I grew strength, courage and confidence, solely down to Caroline and her amazingly positive beat. Caroline’s chapter has sadly closed, however her legacy remains in every painting I produce.

Two years on, and I can proudly say that my very first art exhibition was a huge success, enabling me to make a healthy donation of £1000 towards The Fountain Centre RSCH which offers invaluable support for all those affected by Cancer.

This was an integral reason for the exhibition and without the support of friends and strangers, such a donation would not be possible. Along with my carefully designed website and growing art page on Instagram, I am delighted to be able to share my art work, all made possible because of my amazingly strong, caring and inspirational mentor, Caroline.

I will forever be eternally grateful for the solace of my art and the amazing support of my friends.

I view my work to be a collection that is mindful, placid in tone but uplifting at the same time. I believe the voice of the sea speaks to the soul and likewise, I hope each unique piece I produce reaches out with a personal resonance, and empathy, to all who view my work.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
