The Valentine's Edit: Perfect Pairings

Feb 05, 2021

Don't let lockdown get in the way of love!

When you think of iconic pairings, what pops into your head? Bert and Ernie, Little and Large or bubble and squeak are a few that spring to my mind! Valentine’s Day in lockdown might be a bit different to what you expect, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be filled with cliches; so why not think out of the box for some perfect pairings to make your loved one smile? With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, Claire Whitlock from the Virtual High Street shares her favourite pairings from Haslemere’s businesses.

Foraged Fire Foods & JJ’s Cocktail Club

Enjoy the fabulous and unique micro-batch hot-sauces, artisan condiments and seasonally changing products from Foraged Fire to really set your world on fire! Their Seasonal Selection subscription box includes 2 x Micro-Batch Hot Sauces, 2 x Artisan Condiments or Gourmet Spices (RRP £29.99, every 6 or 12 weeks) and is a great gift to add some spice. Team it up with an amazing Valentine’s Day Hamper on offer from JJ’s Cocktail Club, full of accessories to jazz up your beverages plus a selection of other goodies (RRP £30).

Betty and Maude Vintage Home & Surrey Hills Collection Candles

Browse a large selection of homewares and gifts including my personal favourite, the snuggly Long Cosy-Knit Bed/Boot Socks from Betty and Maude Vintage Home, made from 100% wool (RRP £16.95). Why not add a beautiful fragranced candle and home diffuser set from local candlemaker Surrey Hills Collection with scents inspired by local areas like The Devils Punchbowl and Blackdown? (RRP £26).

Sprakes Flowers & Indian Pearl Catering

Enjoy brightening up your home in winter with a colourful spray from local florist Abby (RRP £35), and warm your heart with the enticing flavours of authentic home-made curry in Indian Pearl Caterings’ Valentines Day package.. Even better, it comes with Burford Bake Boxes’ chocolate brownies, produced in Godalming by a family passionate about baking! (RRP from £37.99).

Puzzle Crazy & The Date Coffee Co

Do you have a loved one that is particularly difficult to buy for? Give the thoughtful gift of a personalized jigsaw: perhaps a photo of a beloved pet or a favourite place from those distant days we all used to travel?  (RRP £21.50). And enjoy some delicious Dafe Coffee from The Date Coffee Co whilst you complete the jigsaw; a caffeine free alternative to your usual brew, made from dates with a comforting chocolatey flavour and produced in Haslemere.  Perfect for whiling away the hours while it pours outside (RRP from £6.50).

Sass and Spirit & The Village Spirit Collective

All about spirit! Choose from a selection of Sass & Spirit’s highly individual Valentine’s Day cards to convey the perfect message to your loved one, along with an extensive range of gifts, all available to order online. Pair this with a gorgeous gift from the Village Spirit Collective; not only do they produce the iconic Haslemere Gin, their Raspberry Gin Cocktail gift set will tantalise your tastebuds and help you create an at home bar while the pubs are closed! (RRP £21).

Now you have the drinks sorted, why not do away with the idea of cooking too? Local eateries have turned to gourmet deliveries during lockdown and created some mouth watering menus for minimum effort, maximum impact! Choose from a selection of three course delights including dover sole, dessert and wine from the Rising Sun in Milland, seared duck breast with a port and cherry sauce from Cruickshanks or Caper and Berry’s chefs table package

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
