Top Tips for Creating Memories This Summer

May 17, 2021

As restrictions lift and we are once again allowed to gather again, the summer of 2021 should be one we never forget. Lucy Dixon, founder of events company House of Lemon, talks about her top tips for creating events to remember this summer.

Creating memories is always at the forefront of my mind, both in my personal and professional life, for me it is what living is all about. The pandemic has been so hard for everyone and amongst all the chaos that has come from it, the effects of lack of human connection has really been highlighted to me. Humans need humans and I think this is one of the reasons I am so passionate about events. Events allow us to connect in all sorts of ways and although during the pandemic the wonders of the internet were able to keep us connected, for me, live events (from dinner with your mum to celebrating your wedding day) can never be replaced.

Now that restrictions are lifting it’s so exciting to see people making plans with their loved ones. There is no doubt about it, there will be many memories made throughout this year. For my first blog contribution I wanted to inspire you to make memories this summer to make up for lost time. Whether it’s a small gathering in your garden or something a little bigger at a venue, there are so many ways to make sure memories are made. So, with that in mind here are my three top tips for creating memories at your events this summer.

Venue - we are so lucky to live in Haslemere - our surroundings are gorgeous and with the backdrop of the local town and countryside we are spoilt for places to hold our special occasions - both inside and out. Whether your event is at your home or at a local venue, the options are endless in our beautiful county. Whichever you choose make sure the space fits with the event and that you dress the space to inspire - this doesn’t have to mean thousands of fairy lights or flower walls throughout the space - something as small as a colourful flower arrangement or a beautiful table setting is often enough.

Entertainment - we have been so long without any kind of live entertainment that this is an absolute must for events coming up this summer. My personal pick would be a live band, but DJ’s, mindreaders or even interactive collaborative art sessions, work amazingly depending on the size and vibe of your event.

Food - this is the one thing we may have had too much of during lockdown, so thinking outside the box might be worthwhile when deciding on food options for your event. For events at venues the likelihood is that they will supply you with your food, but if you are able to book your own food suppliers there are such amazing options in the area. From food vans to gourmet chefs and everything in between the options are limitless.

I hope this blog has inspired you to create memories this summer - whether it’s a small gathering or even a large festival, I’m happy to chat if you need some support or inspiration - my inbox is always open - Lucy@houseoflemon.co.uk.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
