Not-for-profit association run by residents

Organisation and Background:

Transition Haslemere was set up in 2008 by local residents concerned about the advancing climate emergency and sustainability crisis. It is an unincorporated not for profit association and follows the model of the Transition Network, a now global movement of community groups taking local action on climate change, sustainability, biodiversity and social justice. It continues to undertake a range of projects, including promoting active travel, running a community allotment, operating a secondhand bookstall, informing and raising awareness, and networking with local like-minded organisations and individuals.

Who's who:

Chair – Clive Davidson

Treasurer – Jane Devlin

Allotment organiser – Holly Day

Membership

Transition Haslemere does not have formal membership.  There is a core group of active supporters, with many others participating in projects and events on an ad hoc basis.  The organisation also often works in partnership on projects, for example with the Haslemere Active Travel Group, National Trust, Love Haslemere Hate Waste and Haslemere Vision.

Main meetings take the form of monthly 'green drinks' – until the pandemic lockdown, held in a local pub in the evening of the first Thursday of the month and now held online – and 'green coffee' or 'green walk' in the morning of the third Wednesday of the month.  These are open to all.

We publish a monthly email newsletter to subscribers. You can sign up for it at info@transitionhaslemere.org.  We maintain a website – transitionhaslemere.org – and a Facebook page – Transition Haslemere Live.

Transition Haslemere is an open and active group that has an established presence in the town and has coordinated and led efforts to improve local sustainability.

Organisational objectives:

  • To raise awareness of the issues arising from climate change and the biodiversity crisis.
  • To develop and communicate a vision for the Haslemere area as a sustainable and resilient community.
  • To develop locally-relevant, practical and positive solutions to the issues arising from climate change and the biodiversity crisis.
  • To encourage public policy makers to take climate change and biodiversity into consideration in all aspects of public planning.
  • Offer an on-going annual programme of events, films, talks, presentations and workshops on our core issues.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
