Yoga – The Antidote to the Many Challenges of Life?

Mar 15, 2021

Yoga is for everyone.

Yoga teacher Anna Torjussen-Procor of LoveLifeYoga details her journey to finding yoga and the fantastic benefits it can give both your body and mind.

I found my way into yoga partly through a desire to keep fit but perhaps more out of a desire to experience something different. My journey into yoga started soon after my journey into recovery from alcoholism. And what a journey!

As I got into recovery, I sought change - I had to get away from my old ways of doing and thinking about life. I was after a new start. I’d always been a bit of a ‘gym bunny’, sometimes absolutely hammering my body 5 days a week, sometimes 6. Whilst this was clearly helping me both physically and to an extent mentally, I felt stuck. I wasn’t keen on the competitiveness and ego sometimes associated with gyms. I was looking for something else but didn’t know what.

A hot yoga studio was opening in Godalming. Like many women, I was driven by losing that extra pound or by fitting into ‘that dress’, so I decided to give it a go. My motive at that time was simply weight loss and adding to what I was doing in the gym. Although I did hope for and quietly seek something different, something more fulfilling. Something more in line with the spiritual journey I was on in recovery.

I wasn’t very good at it at first but the more I practiced, the more I fell into the yoga ‘well’. Some days it felt so right, some days it didn’t - just like life really! I came to realise it was about practice not perfection, a principle which also applies to recovery from alcoholism. I personally follow a 12 step program of recovery which has quite frankly saved my life.

I think that yoga and 12 step recovery support each other but of course you don’t have to be in recovery to enjoy yoga! For me, though, the combination has helped me with my self-confidence, my ability to deal with what life throws at me and a sense of peace in body, mind and spirit.

The beauty of yoga is that it is for everyone - any age, size or shape. In my teaching, I emphasise my belief that you don’t have to be stick-thin, bendy or flexible. All you need is an open mind, a willingness to give it a go and a sense of humour (much like recovery again!). Many yoga teachers are quite technical, teaching a series of asanas (postures). All great but for me it is more than that. It’s about empowering people to change and opening their eyes to the spiritual traditions of yoga. You might say that without such an approach, yoga is simply ‘fitness’. If that’s your thing then perfect - I believe it can be so much more though.

My journey into yoga has been one of amazement, enlightenment and joy. On a physical level, it has completely changed my body shape for the better. On a mental level, it has given me the time and space to really connect with myself and with my life. It has directly helped me with my self-esteem and self-confidence which I previously lacked in abundance. I was turning 50 when I took it up and was mum to 5 kids. Without yoga, these things might have dragged me down, but I can truly say that I now stand toe-to-toe with the best of them and look life squarely in the eye!

Yoga isn’t just about strength and conditioning. It’s about slowing down the mind, creating space between your thoughts, focusing on your breathing and being truly present in the moment (after all, that’s all we have!) Did you know, for example, that you store emotional energy in your hips?! If you give yoga a go, try working up to the ‘pigeon’ pose and simply observe what comes up for you – you will be amazed! All sorts of emotions can bubble up – anger, joy, sadness, frustration, resentment. I have experienced it and I have witnessed it in others as their teacher. It’s an incredibly powerful and freeing experience.

So, how to start? Where to practice? The answer is anywhere anytime really. Simply roll out your mat, find a quiet space and begin.

If you’ve never practised before, it’s wise to consult your GP first especially if you carry any injuries (like I did from all that gym work!). I’d suggest you find a good teacher – Hello!! - and begin. Maybe a few 1 to 1 sessions to get you going or perhaps a beginners course?

The benefits of yoga are simply enormous, too many to mention! Yoga is a spiritual, mental and physical practice and it’s been around for over 5,000 years, so clearly not this years new health fad. Yoga improves posture, it increases flexibility, it builds muscle strength and boosts your metabolism. Yoga can help lower blood sugar, increase blood flow. It can dramatically increase your self-esteem and self-worth. Yoga can help you explore a different side to your self and approach life in a calm and non-judgmental way - what’s not to like?

The bottom line is, Yoga makes me feel like I am enough!

Namaste.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
