What Makes Good Social Media Content?

May 26, 2021

How do you make that content work for you?

Do you have your own business but struggle to find what is necessary amongst the advice given for social media marketing? Do you feel overwhelmed when preparing content plans and schedules? Jo Treadwell, founder of Social Jo is here to help. Here Jo discusses how to implement a smart social media strategy and some hints and tips to make your social media channels work for you.

What the last year has shown us, is that a presence on social media is crucial for all businesses.

Your ultimate goal may vary depending on whether your business has a physical presence or is fully online. What it does provide for EVERYONE, is a FREE direct line to communicate with your customers, nurturing your relationship with them, as well as helping you find new ones along the way.

But how do you get those customers and potential customers there in the first place? Post as and when you have time / remember and hope for the best?

No, unfortunately there is a bit more to it than just showing up and this is why businesses throughout Surrey and Sussex work with me, so they can get their social media producing the results they want.

What you post is unsurprisingly one of the key elements to achieve social media success. Content is king, but whether that content is deemed good is somewhat in the eye of the beholder. I advise that focussing on creating engaging content for your audience is where your time is best spent.

Why is an engaged audience so important?

The powers that be behind these social media platforms have many goals but primarily they want people to stay on the platform. They do this by ensuring the user has a great experience i.e. showing them a continuous feed of content they enjoy or gain from. What content is shown to which people is decided upon by a clever and highly complex piece of software, referred to as the algorithm.

From a social media perspective, engagement is when your content strikes a chord with your audience to such a level that it provokes them to take action - a like, comment, share or a save. A platform’s algorithm is what decides who sees what content. What an engaged audience signals to this algorithm is that you are producing content that people like and it is this that triggers your content to be shown to them again, shown to more of your followers, as well as to new potential customers, in turn growing your audience.

But how do I produce this great content that gets loads of engagement?

As a social media specialist, this is something I get asked a lot and whether I am creating content for a client, or training them how to do it themselves, these five key considerations are always at the forefront of my mind.

1. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

It is said that if you talk to everyone you talk to no-one. If your customers don’t feel you are talking directly to them, they will never take action on a post they see. So have a real think about who you are targeting and create three or four customer avatars detailing everything about them. If your business has been running for a while, look at who is buying off you already and use this information as a starting point. It is these people that you must ensure you are talking to every single time you communicate with them on any channel.

2. MIX IT UP

Once you feel you have a good understanding of who you are talking to, you want to ensure your content is going to be varied enough to keep them interested and ultimately compelling enough for them to engage every time. If five times a week you tell someone to come to your shop, or buy off your website, your audience will soon get bored; there is no variation, no differentiation, they are not gaining anything new. Think of your social media pages as a magazine. Not every page of a magazine is about the same thing, yet people enjoy reading them from start to finish. What is the common ground between your business and your ideal audience? Selling your product or service to your audience is a good chunk of the content pie, but keeping it varied and giving people that extra bit, will keep them engaged and wanting more.

3. DIG DEEP

So, you now know who you are talking to and the topics you are going to talk to them about, but what will really cause that reaction? What will resonate to such an extent that they have to acknowledge what they have seen or read?

With your ideal audience in mind ensuring your content adds value, educates, resonates or entertains is a quick-fire mix to guarantee they will take action every time.

This quote from Tory Burch is a great one to remember when creating content – big or small, tell people how your product or service will help solve a problem they have.

Remember, people buy from, like talking to and invest in people. Show up on your feed (yes, I mean a picture of you!) and let people know who is the mastermind behind your business. Being authentic, genuine, whilst letting people understand your ‘why’, will make a dramatic difference in how they view your content and react.

4. QUALITY over QUANTITY

POSTING - You don’t just want to be churning content out every day for the sake of it or because you feel you should. Considered content, created with your audience in mind, bearing all the points I have made above, is the absolute key. Three posts a week that speak to your audience and add some sort of value to their lives will be far more effective than posting without purpose seven days a week. The algorithm wants you to be consistent, so decide what is achievable for you and stick to it.

IMAGERY - The quality of the image or video you use also plays a huge part. The average Instagram user scrolls over 300ft per day – think how much information we are absorbing and sifting through. It is the visual that stops that scroll which in turn guides the reader to read the caption and take the action required. Keep them high quality, sized correctly for the intended platform and in line with your business’s branding – it really makes a difference.

CAPTIONS - Take some time over what you say and how you set this out. Add a title to the caption summing up what the post will tell them. We are all busy and don’t have time to read things properly – set your text out so it is easily digestible. Emojis are great for this and help illustrate a point but also don’t be afraid to use white space.

CALL TO ACTION – Finally, what you tell the reader you want them to do with the information you have given, them could be the difference between someone engaging or not.

The options are endless and a simple add on ensures you get the engagement you want!

5. TIMING

You wouldn’t run a presentation half an hour before people arrived at an event, so ensuring your content is going out at a time the majority of your audience is online, is key.

That also works for you – don’t post and ghost. Be there to respond to comments after you post, ideally with another question. This not only opens up a dialogue where you are building a relationship with that potential customer, but in turn you are adding even more engagement to that post too!

Pulling all the above together and formulating a plan can feel daunting but if you feel it is something you need some guidance on then I would be delighted to help. I love working with small business owners in a 1:1 or group training scenario and offer a range of training and support packages to suit all needs and budgets. My aim is to leave you feeling inspired and excited about all you can achieve through your business’s social media, whilst taking away the overwhelm and giving you the confidence you need.

Jo will be talking on her page about how you find out the best time to post for your business’s Instagram and Facebook next week, so follow to make sure you don’t miss out!

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
