Mothers Day Gifts Any Mum Will Love

Last Mothers Day, I bought my Mum a card that bore the message “I love you Mum, despite your terrible taste in curtains”. I was really pleased with myself and thought it would raise a laugh as we regularly tease her on her interesting selection of charity shop finds, however it seems I had thought the same when I purchased it the year before!

This year, armed with the range of amazing artworks on the Virtual High Street, I can't possibly mess it up. Whatever your Mum loves to do, Haslemere's local businesses have it all. Candles, flowers, wine, chocolates? We have you covered.

Laura Palmer

Meet Laura→

The Foodie Mum

Do memories of your childhood always feature your Mum in the kitchen? If she loves her food and cooks up a storm, here are some fabulous foodie gifts that will tantalise her tastebuds.

Clockwise: Card from a selection at Betty and Maude Vintage Home, Cakes from Pinder's Patisserie, Rose from Blackdown Ridge, ice cream from a selection at Dylan's Ice Cream, whole lobster and wild garlic for 2 from Applegarth Farm and dulce de leche from Foraged Fire Foods.

Why not treat her to some beautiful Mother's Day cupcakes from Pinders Pattisserie? Laura produces these stunning cakes and sweet treats and it would be a travesty to not give any sweet-toothed foodie lover something from her collection (box of 6 cupcakes, RRP £20).  She is also offering a treat box, filled to the brim with blondies, brownies, eclairs, chocolate dipped strawberries, biscuits and a cupcake (RRP £35).

Blackdown Ridge Sparkling rose (RRP £25) – did you know we had our own vineyard within a stones throw of the town? Blackdown Ridge offer a selection of wines; this rose is predominantly pinot noir and pairs well with smoked salmon or lobster, such as this whole lobster with wild garlic from Applegarth Farm in Grayshott (RRP £48).

For a dessert to remember, why not try your hand at this chocolate and miso tart recipe from Foraged Fire? Dulche de leche  and hot honey can be purchased here (RRP £6.50 and £7.99 respectively), and would add a delightfully indulgent twist to vanilla ice cream from local's favourite, Dylan's Ice Cream.

The Fashionista Mum

Never one to let having kids cramp her style, this mum knows how to dress and accessorise to put her best foot forward.

Clockwise: earrings from a selection at Artisan Annie, scarf available at Roxtons, shoes from Luigis, polka dot blouse from Anya, card from a selection at Sass and Spirit, wishbone necklace from George Rain Jewellers.

Whether your Mother is a modern or contemporary dresser, likes to be bold or just add flashes of colour, the ladieswear shops in and around Haslemere have something for her. Artisan Annie hand makes a selection of jewellery to suit any style, and team one of her bright pairs of earrings with a beautiful animal print blouse from high street favourite Anya for a gift your stylish Mum will love.

Roxton's have a wide range of punchy scarfs with big, block colours, and George Rain Jewellers add a sophisticated twist with their range of beautiful necklaces, including this wishbone pendant and chain.  Luigi's is on hand to help you choose gifts so she can put her best foot forward, and paired with a card from the selection at Sass and Spirit, there is a wealth of choice.

The Green Fingered Mum

If you often catch your mum whispering to her indoor plants as she waters them, this section is for you. Your mum loves the outdoors, is at one with nature and plants thrive in her care.

Spring wreath available at The Suburban Succulent, Weathered Heart from Betty and Maude Vintage Home, Card from a selection at CJ Garden Photography, cupcakes from a A Fancy Piece, ranaculas form a selection at Sprake's Flowers, jug from Little Green Studio.

A beautiful bunch of flowers from the range offered by Sprake's Flowers, presented in these gorgeous little tapered jugs available from Little Green Studio are bound to lift even the greyest of days. If your mum is all about floral arrangements, why not opt for something a little different with this stunning wreath from Suburban Succulent? The beautiful options on offer are so aesthetically pleasing and really different to the normal floral wreaths on the market.

A pretty addition for any garden, choose a weathered metal heart stake from Betty and Maude Vintage Home, and as there is always room for cake, why not opt for these show stopping cupcakes from A Fancy Piece - so pretty you wouldn't even guess they are edible! Cards available from a selection at CJ Garden Photography will finish the gift.

The Pamper Mum

Every Mum needs a bit of me time, and that's no different while we can't leave the house. Let her lock herself in the bathroom with her noise cancelling earphones and slip into zen; better still, take the kids out for a walk so she can feel the benefits of sheer silence!

Clockwise: Bath tray from AJT Woodcrafts, Aroma Skies room diffuser, available with candles in a matching scent, voucher for a cut and colour from Millie Jones, picture perfect chocolates from T&M Artisan, cards from a selection by Carolynne Winchester and gin from the Village Spirit Collective.

What pamper fan doesn't love a long, indulgent bath? These gorgeous and practical bath trays from AJT Woodcrafts are handmade and a great way to hold her Village Spirit Collective gin and Aroma Skies candles while she soaks in the bubbles and snacks on her T&M Artisan truffles.

If she is in need of a few hours rest and relaxation out of the house, book a voucher for local favourite Millie Jones Hair.

Don't let lockdown get in the way of love!
by Olive and Bloom Grazing 04 Feb, 2021
Our first This Is Haslemere Edit is brought to you by Lisa from Olive and Bloom Grazing, and is packed with tasty treats made on our doorstep. We count ourselves lucky to live in such an inspiring and creative area such as Haslemere. Since setting up Olive & Bloom Grazing, we’ve come across so many amazing local companies, from which we’ve sourced products from or collaborated with. Thanks to the Virtual High Street, we’ve also been introduced to some fabulous small businesses, which we’ve been using both the business and personally. We’ve listed five of our favourites – it was a hard choice to narrow it down to just five! Sarah Bakes Cakes – Chocolate cupcakes We’ve always admired Sarah’s cakes on social media and recently indulged in some of her stunning chocolate cupcakes topped with Terrys Chocolate Orange, to add a bit of cheer to a recent Lockdown birthday! They certainly did the trick. Not only do Sarah’s cakes look amazing, but her attention to detail is also second to none and the cakes taste delicious. You can’t help but smile when you see one of Sarah’s cakes, from the characters she creates for toppers to the elegance of her buttercream layer cakes, everything always looks divine. If you’re looking for a pick me up during Lockdown 3, then please try a box of cupcakes, you won’t be disappointed! Noble & Stace Chocolatiers – Dark chocolate Pastilles What can we say! Noble & Stace chocolates are like little pieces of art, almost too good to eat –almost! We recently included the Dark Chocolate Pastilles in our Festive Grazing Boxes, which are the perfect finisher to a meal. Beautiful discs of dark chocolate topped with a crystalised almond, orange and cranberry. We also have our eye on the Valentine’s Day range which has just been launched, which would make the perfect gift for a loved one. You’ll find a gorgeous variety of chocolate, and we love the fact that they work with other regional brands for fillings; making the most of what we have to offer on our doorstep.

Interview with Ian Rowley, owner of The Haslemere Bookshop The Haslemere Bookshop is an independent bookshop at the heart of Haslemere High Street selling new and second-hand books, and cards. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business? There has been a bookshop on the High Street for many years. When I took over the shop from Ronald Timms in 2014, I had no idea how a bookshop worked; fortunately the staff (all friends or family) did! Since then, through their hard work, the business has been transformed. Not only does the shop look very different but we are online, more community focussed and our second-hand book section rejuvenated.
